Make sure you have up-to-date and compatible device drivers for your soundcard, motherboard and especially your video card.

Seeing as you have an AMD setup, I suggest you go here if you have a VIA chipset motherboard http://www.via.com.tw and download the latest 4-in-1 Hyperion driverset for your OS.

Then go to http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp for the latest/BETA Detenator drivers.

Ensure you you also have DirectX9.0c installed aswell, as I have a feeling thats what RTW was released with...

i have not been able to play Rome Total War since purchasing a new computer. I've got the newest nvidia drivers as well as the newest via motherboard drivers. it freezes at the startup of the game.

my system specs are
AMD 64 3000+
1gb ddr2 4200
80gb seagate sata hd
geforce 5200 fx 128mb

i've tried changing my resolution to 800x600 and disabling my norton both during the installation and while trying to play the game. still it freezes.

any ideas?

The Geforce 5200 FX 128MB, is a very low end Graphics card. It could be lockin' up because the card will not run the game at all

Too true, i always just about double the specs on the box, that gives me the machine that it should really be run on

well i just went out and bought a new graphics card. i got a 5500 oc and did a reformat. still the game locks up in the same place. the reason that i'm sticking with nvidia chiped cards is that my board is a nvidia board. i'm at the point of giving up and selling the game i just bought.

Does the OC mean you have overclocked the card , or did it come like that from the retailer?

if you got it like that from the retailer then it is not the card, if however you have OCed yourself then maybe it is getting too hot?

The other alternative is, that your CPU is overheating and locking you out for your own protection.

I apologies for bugging you with another complain about RTW. I cannot play it either. I read the other comments and advises on the forum and I still think I have a totally different problem.

The game is installed (although with some difficulty), the drivers are updated, the first window of the RTW appears and gives me a few options, the desired one being "Play game", of course. Once I click this, the screen changes black as it would go to the next level, however, seconds later it closes off entirely and the desktop appears on the screen. Does it sound familiar to anyone? Any thoughts on what it may be and how to fix it? Help, anyone?! (I'm a chick, that's why I cried :P )

My system is:
Pentium 4 3.0, 512 DDRAM, GeForce 4 MX440 etc

Many thanks in advance.

P.S. After 3 years of waiting for this game and all this hardship with getting it to play, is it only me who thinks that the designers of RTW do not deserve my (our) money?
