some developers just dont get the point..

they make games that have to look really good, but what they dont understand is that 75 % of all gamers doesnt have a graphics card capable of running such "b-e-a-utiful" games. Some gamers dont even have the money... so their efforts are a bit useless for probably the next year.

My god, I just figured out that soft shadows were off for me. Turned em on and it went from nice and smooth to that 'im moving through water!' feel. I hope they manage to optimise it for the full game. I know soft shadows can be pretty gpu intensive, but Im sure its not such a big deal for me on other pretty games eg Splinter Cell:CT (which i just completed tonight woo!).

Also had a few probs with voices cutting out, anyone else get this?... (on an Audigy 2ZS)
Soft shadows and lighting is CPU heavy not GPU, HAHAHA I win again. NERD!!!

The best part about the FEAR demo was the intro.

i definatly agree with you kami!! i found the music behind matched very well with the scenes!

the soft shadows is F.E.A.R., are an ersatz of soft shadows. the engine takes the sharp shadow, and then adds different degrees of smooth shadows on the outline. in UT 2007 it will be really soft shadows, comparing the distance between an object an the light source. but here in F.E.A.R, it's like calculating 5 shadows per model.

it's both... the CPU sends the information to the GPU, the GPU calculates it. The CPU takes the physics, the scripts, models, world, and send the graphic part to the GPU. so....when you ave a game like doom3 where a huge part of the game is dedicated to lightings and shadowing, you can have a amd X2 4800+ and a geforce 2mx, the game won't run.

Ah I see... So only people with dual R520s will be able to run this game smoothly with soft shadows, hehe. I guess I can live without em.

Can it works on P4 2800, 512 mb RAM, and G-Force4 4600 128mb...? Damn, I've no money to buy a new graphic card, but I really want to play this game...

It depends on how the developers supported soft-shadows. Nvidia have proprietary algorithms for doing it in hardware, but ATI do not. If the guys coding the renderer chose not to support Nvidia's routines then it is likely that they pull off the shadow textures from the 8-bit stencil buffer and filter it on the CPU before pumping it back out to the GPU for inclusion into the renderer.
