Bloom effect overrated?

Does anybody thing that the bloom effect used in games like Aoe3 is way to overrated?

I personally think so...all it does is hurt my eyes and hinder gameplay. What do you guys think?

Looks nice in the AOEIII screenshots I've seen (with bloom). But my radeon 9800pro can't do the bloom so I can't really say :/ My card cant do the bloom effect, right?

some games overuse it, which is of course bad, but like most effects it can look good if used properly

Are we talking about HDR or just some home made bloom FX?

i don't see why yours wouldn't be able to. I've got a 9700 pro and it can do bloom effects. works fine for me. i'm sure your card can do it

Definitely. There comes a point in some games where it's used so much, everything is all blurry and glowy... like 1950's portraits of people. It all looks so dramatized and overdone to me.


However, from what I've seen of Lost Coast (HL2 thing), and from the old Source tech demos, HL is looking really good with bloom and HDR. The new AoE looks like it way overuses it (im about to install the demo), and farcry... well it worked well sometimes. Other times it felt like I was playing a Tim Burton movie. Like Big Fish. Overuse of bloom reminds me of the movie Big Fish.

Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike for Xbox uses it and it hinders the gameplay because it is so damn hard to see...
