tbh Gatekeeper I donīt know exactly maybe the people who buy and run ranked server get the technical support and updates directly from EA.
So those server versions are only for the brave ppl who donīt buy in on EAīs merchandise and run a private server which is unranked... ;)

As far as i know the difference between ranked/unranked is with the points ..
when you play Battlefield 2 you get points each time you kill somebody or take a flagpoint, or get deducated when you teamkill. At the end of the round it shows you how much points you scored and those are added to your overall score. Those points are what you need to move up in rank, from corporal to sergeant etc.. When you move up a rank, you can unlock new & better weapons. So the difference between ranked and unranked is the fact that only the ranked servers keep track of the points and allow you to level up and unlock those weapons, unranked ones are not supported by EA, and are just regular servers that dont contribute to the score. Unless I'm very very wrong... |

The unranked server downloads are for hosts (Because the ranked servers are still being testing by gamespot betas) and the actual patch file is for the user. I hope that helped.
