Yeah, so PCGamer gave Quake 4 a 70%, IGN gave it a 8.1. What do you guys think about these ratings? Do you think that ID has ruined their future of video games, or do you think there is still hope? Do you think that Quake 4 will be a rehash of Doom3 with better multiplayer and a different story, or do you think it will be an epic adventure that changes the way games will be played forever? I personally think Quake 4 is gonna suck as bad as Doom 3, and it will be a rehash of Doom 3 completely. The Doom movie will put the nail in the coffin, and will ultimately end a franchise that was once the king of all shooters. I laugh at all of you who were in awe at the first quake 4 screenshot. The first time I saw it, I posted on these boards and said something on the lines of "It looks just like Doom 3, clay models and dark indoor maps, itll suck" I hate being so right, but feel free to disagree and post away. /rant

I agree, ID's games today aren't as ground breaking as they were in the early 90s for obvious reasons. Success is a lot to live up to, and in my opinion Quake 4 looks like it offers nothing different than Quake 3 did, apart from the graphical progressions. Really, what have ID changed in Quake 4 when compared to Q3 gameplay wise? Enemy Terrority still looks interesting though.
Time will tell though, I think the game will still sell quite well. I also think the Doom 3 film will be a success in the box office, just like those lame Resident Evil films were. |

Gonna play id ( ;) ) anyway
The games may not be that much groundbreaking and blabla, but i like em. Not the forget most groundbreaking games aren't that great either when the come out. In the old days the CD-cover always looked better then the real game, nowadays the trailers do. In lots of trailers and presentations you'll see awesome stuff, but when the real thing comes out, most of it is cut out. Aah well, personally i wanna shoot some friggin strogg again ![]()

iD didn't make quake4, they seem to have gotten tired of their games, trying to make something "new and different," but we all know how well Doom3 turned out, it got 94%'s across the board for the first 2 weeks, and then people actually played it.
I think the iD guys have gotten bored of making the same type of fun DM multiplayer game that they started doing in the early 90s, after nearly 15 years I'd probably be tired of it too. So they're sending their best franchises over to some so-so dev (Splash damage has the rights for ET: Quake Wars, Wolf: ET, they made the Online part of Doom3; Nerve Sofware made online part of RtCW, Doom3RoE, RTCW Tides of War for the Xbox; Raven Software did Quake4, making the currently untitled Wolfenstein game). The problem is that iD made good multiplayer games that had okay single player. Now they've basically sold off their best brands, and seemingly stopped making Online-DM games. Hell iD hasn't made a multiplayer game since Quake3 in 99, even Doom3's multiplayer was made by Splash damage. Blaming iD for Quake4 seems to make as much sense as blaming Infinity Ward for United Offensive, sure IW made CoD, but Gray matter made UO, you can't directly blame the quality of the game on someone who didn't even develop it. But, I think the fact that they licensed it to them lets you blame them indirectly, at least partly, more specifically you can see a trend. iD got tired of making what they were always good at, revolutionary or at least evolutionary multiplayer games, when quite frankly thats what they were really good at. Oh and releasing a game that ran like crap on ATi and was really only solidly playable on Nvidia cards at a time when ATi was still the gamer market leader(the 6xxx series was just out, hadn't really gotten a hold), well that can't have been a good choice. Playing a slow game, from a fast game genre, is even less fun when ur doing it at 25 FPS on medium settings at high-level hardware. iD got tired of making what they were good at making, so yeh, it is the fall of iD, all the brilliant guys over at iD have gotten tired of making good games, hell this next game their doing is probably going to be Carmack's last. Yeh, sure, the Fall of iD seems to be proper, except, whose going to take their place at competing with Epic? well, step up to the plate someone. EDIT: Some edits about how their selling off their brands. added the bit on Nerve, Raven, fixed the bit on Splash making q4. |
