Ok. So curiousity got the better of me and I ignored my "ignore Gazz's post" philosophy.
And yes Hitman I wouldn't miss this party if the world was about to end in five minutes. I think the elimination of the DRM (Digital Rights Management) is fine. I would encourage all of you to follow this course of action. Distributing software for free is a great and humbling thing. I would encourage all of you to quit your jobs and school and make free software for a living. In all sincerity, the world does need more free stuff. So I say, go ahead and make it a full time payless job. By the way, it is anti-DRM not anti-copy protection. Although you could extrapolate that to copy protection, it is not actually specifically anti-CP. Instead I believe they are dealing with the legal right to use software freely. Just out of curiousity, how many of you are going to start working for free from now on? Let me know so I can download your stuff (legally). ![]()

Actually, I just had a brilliant idea!
We should dissolve all game development companies and publishers. Let all those employees go to work in another industry. Then they have paying day jobs. Then the hobbyist gamers can take up the slack by becoming the free (no DRM) creators of games. We do away with the professionally made games altogether. We can start here with the list of anti-sf people in the poll thread. Some of them can learn programming, others become artists, train a few people to level design and we should be set. That's twenty odd people. After we get them all trained (probably a few years) then we can probably whip up a game in a decade or so (remember, everyone will need day jobs to survive so we can't expect full timers). Now what kind of game would you like to make?

Well, I am flattered that I am quote worthy.
I should point out that the impact on small developers like us is a little different than EA etc. As for CDV, it is going belly up. Not the North American one but the European one and it is very much due to finances/sales. But seriously, why not do away with developers. Why not make it a hobby that people do in their spare time. That solves both sides. Your anti-DRM thing is all fine and well but your expectation is that people have no rights over their own creation. The logical choice is that people work for free with the understanding that they relinquish rights to their intellectual property. This is not without precedent either. There is tons and tons of free programs on the internet. It is a viable model so why not move gaming that way. I see no problem with this at all. I believe that it even has precedent in the gaming world. There are indie companies that make free games.

Really, CDV is going belly up? They must have been too late with changing their copy protection policy because they were the ones effected most by the bad press about SF and how they as a company handled that. Simply ignoring it and deleting bad press about it on their boards, kinda like you guys. Next to that their overall support sucks, they should have hired someone like you to stay in touch with the community, on that point for you guys. (do you have any link about cdv?)
Why should you distance yourself from your intelectual property? I am not at all supporting the theft of that, I just oppose the way copyprotection affects paying customers and the absolutely discusting responses they get from developers and sf themselves, if they report any problems with cp's they didn't ask for. Feel free to make games in your basement if you feel like that, I won't stop you. Mods have been made for free online for ages and the net is full of free games. Just browse trough gh's demosection and you'll find dozens. But most games will continue to be made by pro's who get paid for a good game, and as long as the game is good people will buy just because they want the original or legit onlineplay or just no hazzzle when they get an update. Have some faith in that instead of blaming piracy for low salesfigures. Perhaps you should look at your game itself if it isn't selling well instead off blaming external factors. (not that I am saying that your game isn't selling well, I honestly don't know. Just an example) Edit: oh, and I truly believe addicting games like wow badly damage the pcgames market. Those addicts hardly buy and play other games.

Anti copyprotection day isn't for those who use warez (although it will benefit those people asweel). It's a complaint from legitimate costumers who have to deal with protection malware on their dvd's and pc software and have difficulties because of that malware.
Legitimate users shouldn't be affected by these types of protection that is targeted at the warez scenen. Customers aren't the ones doing something wrong, but they do get affected by it... That plain sucks donkeyballs
