Discuss...

I really have had no problems with games (except for a few older ones), so I really like my Win2kpro, but I haven't tried XP, so not sure.

omg, you just gave me command line nightmares :Oo:

Not to mention having a different boot disk for each game because nobody can decide how they want to handle extended memory

I use, and like Win2000 pro. Some say XP is a tad better performance wise, but I don't think it's by much, or at all now that the drivers have had time to mature etc.

Dos 6.0 is indeed great if you like old games, but I doubt it'd run Unreal 2 very well ;)

Win2000 pro as well here... It manages RAM better that every other OS out there, is VERY stable (Current Win2000 uptime: 2wks 1day 9hrs 11mins 16secs) and performance wise it rocks. So yeah, not only it's awesome for work, but it's excellent for games as well imho. And I ain't gonna switch for the next couple of years, that's for sure B)

WinXP Pro edition, Period.

If you have plenty of memory and you wanna play games, run music edit videos etc..., winXp will be your best choice.
winxp is The most up to date , stable OS ever.
Games will run slower on win200Pro. i have the two os installed in two different partirions and winxp win almost in every benchmark i run on both.
Booting time: Winxp is Faster then Win2000 Pro
And dont forget Winxp Pro =Win2000Pro +Win98.

I disagree with you guys but Winxp wins in almost every Benchmark, And is the OS of choice
;)

Comparison Table :

Win2000Pro WinxpPRo

3DMARK2003 : 5134 5402
3DMARK2001 SE: 13280 14834
Doom3 Leaked : 27 fps 34 fps
Raven Shield : 98 fps 109 fps
NOLF2 : 102 fps 104 fps
SOF2 : 93 fps 99 fps
Unreal2 : 82 fps 88 fps

* 1024x768x32 all details set to high.

I disagree with this IRS:

'And dont forget Winxp Pro =Win2000Pro +Win98'

WinXP has nothing from Win98 in it. It's totally 32bit and uses the NT kernel for superior memory management and efficiency. All incarnations of 9x were based on a 16 bit subsystem (DOS) with some 32bit bits put in.

Anyway, back to the topic. Any windows variant is the best gaming OS as it is most broadly supported and compatible.

I recently used Transgaming's WineX in linux though, and was surprised by the performance of Medal of Honour.. really, really promising. Hopefully one day linux will be the mainstream OS of choice.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Winxp unites the old NT and win98/Me codebases into a single entity, so saying that WinXP has nothing from Win98 in it is simply irrelevant ;)
Microsoft aim point was to create a single unified windows platform for every level of deployement from home users to server workers.

Lol,in Winxp There is something called compatibility: Most programs run properly on Windows XP, The exceptions are some older games and other programs that were written specifically for an earlier version of Windows.

Pretty simple, In term of gaming ( Benchmarks are the only FACTS) Winxp offer some significant improvements over WIN2000 PRO.

I know about compatability mode. It still doesn't take away from the fact that it doesn't run on a 16 bit subsystem like 9x it merely emulates this for older programs.

It doesn't contain 9x code.

Here it is from the horses mouth (so to speak):

'Windows XP is built on an enhanced Windows 2000 code base'
From: MS Windows XP Technical Overview

They didn't just rip bits out of 9x and shove it with 2k code and say 'tada, here's windows XP'.
