With the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP firmly in charge of the casual gaming crowd and the highend gaming crowd, where will Handheld gaming go now? The DS still sells like there's no tomorrow and the PSP on which many people give up about a year ago (including me) completely retook the market when the slim version came out and sales figures have gone trough the roof.
And now what? Technically the PSP is a miracle and as far as a handheld goes it's extremely versatile and capable of amazing things. It lacks competition in the highend sector and there isn't any need for a PSP2 at this time or in the near future. The DS is so extremely popular with such a huge fanbase that Nintendo can just sit back and cash in for the next few years.
What do you guys think?

I have four DS' and my kids and loove the things. I don't own a PSP but, I would like to have one. I really like the DS because it is getting so interactive. That is what I think will happen with handhelds. Games like Duck Amuck really interest me even though I have not played it yet, it seems very suited to the DS.

I have one DS but I hardly use it. My girlfriend loves it though and really enjoys braintraining. A fun handheld that might be a bit underpowered in todays world but who cares. Most of it's customers sure don't. The PSP get's Skype and GPS soon, one more excuse to slam it into my car or take it along on one of my rides on my motorcycle for which I don't have GPS.

man, the PSP was such a waste of money. if you want a portable multimedia thingy then get a cheap notebook or so which has a bigger screen and spare yourself the eyecancer by watchin movies on the PSP. The only thing the PSP is good for is for watching pr0n. that's all the PSP is in the end: a portable Pr0n viewer. even the games on it sux ass. DS on the other hand is such a babe

Having a new competitor in that sector would probably overcrowd the handheld market. It would also mean that MS would have to invest tons of money on that and they still haven't made a dime on their xbox project (6 billion loss so far). It's unlikely to happen, I even doubt there will be a next generation xbox. Who would want a MS product in their hand anyway, it would overheat :P
Microsoft isn't allowed to play with the cool kids anyway, that's why it uses those hard measures to rule the market. So they can say what to do and not fear to get kicked in the nuts

Alot of people i know have a DS, and have loads of fun with it, and most (90%) of the games are pretty mediocre on the PSP.

In all fairness, 90% of the games on the DS are mediocre too.

I have a PSP and a DS but I never play the DS. There again, it's the old version (the big ugly one) and not a lite. on the PSP I'm really lookin forward to God of War - it's just like playing a mini-PS2 and much more convenient. I don't play it on the move, just in bed and while watchin the TV
