yeah, putting it back to left would be nice... not sure how easy is and if someone i.e. Interman wishes to give a try

I preferred white BG for text but love the left thingie he did

what about white for text background and gray for back-background?

Avatars and smilies are fine. You will need to go into your user CP and enable some settings for them to be visible.
