Toshiba withdraws from HD-DVD. The format war is over.
According to Reuters Toshiba will announce it's dropping hd-dvd this week. Of course signals showing that the inferior format was bound to fail emerged from day one, but now it's finally over even for those who strongly believed in it.

Also, first thread about anything else then the new forums. Hurray.

it's a (slightly) superior product which loses due to marketing... vhs versus beta-max again. Anyway good it happened this early avoiding two boxes to most people.

Actually Sony owning the format that they publish movies, music and software is a horrible thing.
Rootkit virus, anyone?

People who think that Blu-ray is just a Sony product are completely misinformed. They can use Wiki for a unrelated copy scheme from years before developed by a outside contracter and not by Sony, but can't seem to find info on which company actually has the majority share in BD. It isn't Sony, that's for sure. You might want to search for the name "philips", a really small company that also invented those small unimportant things like the CD. The small names IBM, Samsung, Sharp and Apple might pop up too.
HD-dvd is slightly grainier then Blu_ray and can hold a maximum of 50 GB (if those discs ever hit the market). Blu ray can keep up to 200 GB in data and has a sharper image. For reference, that means it can hold all episodes of friends on just one disc so you will only have to step on 1 disc to get rid of that crappy show. HD-DVD is in no way superiour and it's nice to see that the "beta-max" of this age has won instead of history repeating itself again. The only positive thing about HD_DVD I can think of is the functionality of it's menu (really pretty good) and the other positive thing is that it's dead and gone.

I'll help you out on who owns majority share of Blu-ray: Sony owns the trademark.
Guess who controls Blu-ray?

Philips and then comes the blu-ray group which includes Sony and even Microsoft (MS get's around 10 dollarcents per blu-ray disc that uses their K-something Codec).
