Looks like violent games are making us dumb

A study conducted by the Kriminologischen Forschungsinstituts Niedersachsen (KFN) has found that the consumption of violent media – including violent videogames – has a direct impact on a child’s school grades.

Using schoolboys as a sample group, the study found that the average grades for German, maths and general studies for children who regularly play games cleared for ages 16 and above were 0.1 to 0.5 below the national average. By contrast, boys who never play such games typically receive grades slightly above this.

In the case of games cleared for ages 18 and above, the effect was even more profound. According to the results, the average grades of children who regularly played such titles were 0.3 to 0.66 below the national average, while those that never played such titles were again marginally above.

Although the study goes on to say that the average intelligence of the parents as well as the ethnicity of the child are also important factors, it does go on to warn that “the more time schoolboys and schoolgirls spend consuming media and the more brutal its content is, the worse their grades are” and calls for politicians to address the situation.

Actually German is considered as a hard and aggresive language and proven to be the most agressive sounding one in Europe. They should start by not teaching those kids their native language.

The average intelligence of the parents as well as the ethnicity of the child and the surroundings of the child are the most important factors in regards to it's intelligence. Media in whatever way are overrated in their importance.

Edit: let's not forget that Kamisorix is German and if he was included it's pretty logical the average went down. In that perspective the kids who played games overall did pretty good.

i think all humans are pretty dumb...why else would we spent time on the net posting crap

I wouldn't say it has to do with intelligence but they (kids) will certainly study less etc. if they are sucked into games.

if it wouldn't be games then it would be TV or some other crap. it's like blaming video games for car eccidents because the driver was thinkin of playing halo instead of concentrating on the traffic

Personally, I have always found games to be more addicting than TV etc.

depense what you're into. gambling, videogames, drugs...all triggers the same part of the brain that makes the addiction thingy. but only if you take it as such

I'm sure that things like gambling and drugs can also affect school performance. ;)
