Nice to have a castle that can dive into the ground

Mary fired off a fire spell at the mech, and Earl was impressed to say the least.

So here we are, looking for a cave in the desert somewhere...

Went through the cave, chatted with some guys, went to a mountain, and ran into this guy

Amb finished him off with a special ability where you select deathblow from the menu, and input a key combination (left, right, left, a).

Next we made it to a cave that belongs to the resistance movement. They got introduced to Mary, and she agreed to help out.

A little later the game lets you choose the order of the next few hours. I started off with Bob, whose scenario begins in South Figaro. You're being chased by the imperial guards, since you are after all a pretty notorious thief.

To succeed you have to steal clothes off merchants and guards, get an old guy drunk to have him reveal a secret path, and make fight a bunch of guys.

Here we're at a different part of the world where Kefka's trying to invade a castle. He fails, poisons the water, killing a bunch of the soldiers there, his own soldiers, and ultimately the king. His samurai buddy survives

but his wife and daughter don't... Ultimate revenge plot ahoy!

Some of our characters run into the samurai and decide to help out. He joins the party, and you steal some mech suits to go kick some ass.

Once away from the desert you run into some creepy forest.

Sweet graphics.

Turns out the train is there to move spirits to the spirit world, or something. You weren't supposed to be on board, and need to get off asap.

Not all the ghosts were bad. Some sold us items, and in this cart they even made us dinner.

And here we are at the engine room. Went inside, read the instructions, flipped some switches, and went outside to turn off the main switch - coincidentally at the very front of the train.

Never fought a train in an RPG before

The train sets us off, and the samurai sees his wife and daughter get on the train. He's wasn't able to save them, but somehow I'm guessing we'll see them again.

The assassin from before (the third party member) heads off on his own for a while, so now it's just Amb and the samurai. In order to progress we had to jump off.

A kid named Gau gets us on shore, but he's afraid and runs off. On the way to Mobliz we meet him several times while fighting mobs. He tells us to get lost, and that this is his place. Not sure what his problem is, so we chase him off.

Yay, a town. We'll see what happens later.

Nice, the new DS version looks like a pretty lazy port though. I'll have to play one version either way, since I never actually finished it back in the day. Made it to some sewers or something and got stuck.

Hmm, here's the weird guy again.

He's our buddy now. Nice, I guess. The thing about Gau is that he can immitate just about any enemy, and "play back" the attack later. In order to get where we need to go we needed to find an underwater helmet. Gau knew where it was, so next we went to where the underwater path starts.

On the way you have to make some left / right choices, but eventually I made it.

And once there we hopped on the boat for South Figaro.

Cefka is pissed.

This battle works a lot like when we saved Mary a few hours ago. Cefka sends out a bunch of soldiers, and we divide into three groups. The thing is that if the soldiers reach the phantom beast before we reach Cefka we're hosed.

You're probably supposed to hop between the three groups, but I decided to make one super group and head directly for Cefka.

It worked out well.

But then!

Mary transforms into... something, and flies off super fast.

Tracking her down seemed to take a while.

Ok so to recal, in order to save Mary / alien girl we need to save the phantom beasts at the majik research institute. In order to get there we need an airship, and in order to get an airship we need to charm this weird adventurer guy who's in love with a girl who Celes really looks like. Look forward to the famous opera scene in the next update.
