This is a huge step in making 3d gaming available for both Windows and Linux. It will also pressure MS to make their current os line more suitable for gaming and faster in general. This news is positive for both sides of the field.

It doesn't make them do anything, your correct. But if Linux can be developed to outperform Windows in a gaming environment then Microsoft will be forced to do something or die. I'm a Windows man, but I'll change OS's. I remember switching from DOS to Windows, I can switch again if I want to.

do you really believe that? Nvid had pretty good linux support. the problem is not necessary the harware support since linux does a fine job coupling with them,- it's the software. if ms would have to bend to what we want they wouldn't have created that abomination called vista.
As long the software/game devs won't follow, and changes is they wont because everyone has windows...it comes with the sys one way or the other, but not everyone is willing to head over and learn about linux,- nothing will change anytime soon. chances are better that a mac will be adopted as a gaming machine. man doesn't like changes, that's in our nature, unless we have to. ![]() Last edited by KamisoriX : 05-29-2008 at 05:34 AM. |

I never implied people will have to change OS. If Linux becomes successful in running games or even running games faster then Windows, then MS will simply respond quickly and adapt. Both systems will benefit from the competition.
MS simply doesn't have to bend to our choices right now because we have no choice. However, gamers in general are more then willing to switch sides for better performance and current linux distributions are becoming so simple you wouldn't have to learn much new info about it. Updating drivers is a ten fold easier in Mandriva (which I have on pc) then it is in Windows where I have to uninstall, reboot and reinstall and reboot. In Mandriva I download and update and that's it.

Game developers will follow the money. If Linux becomes a real competitor in the gaming market, then they will suddenly have the resources and support for it.

Well, just a driver does not make Linux competetive to windows for gaming or give gamedevs any incentive to move to linux. Let Linux get a competetive desktop OS first.

It is already competitive for years, using the Force of Open Source (FoOS).
