What if this is all just marketing hype?

I’m not sure if we touched on this in other threads, but thought it could use a fresh thread of its own.

What if we are all being suckered by Valve just to build up this incredible media frenzy around this spectacular new game? I mean look at the buzz this has created-it’s why I joined this forum (well, that and Ben’s gay avatar).

What are your thoughts? Is this “hacker� real? Were the bits and pieces “leaked� just to give fans a taste of what's to come? Come on, think about it, why would a major corporation be susceptible to a hackers attack after managing to keep this under wraps for 5 years? You don’t think they have Zone Alarm or some other firewall running? And don’t give me crap about some IRC hack crap, please!

I’m thinking this is all a marketing ploy by Valve, and if so, kudos to them! Cause I know I’ll be all over HL2 when it comes out in stores.

anyway... my view is sorta half and half. i reckon there probly was a hacker, but valve are definitely milking it, probably to cover up for being crap, like crawler said. my opinion of valve has definitely gone really down hill since all this stuff

Personally i think it was a older alpha than the actual one they had at E3, and Valve will use this to their advantage, because when the game is released in november(?) we will all (people who played the Alpha) get a shock at how amazing and cleaned up the game is. THIS is the reason i think valve has said didly squat on the situation, they are the Steven Speilberg of the gaming industry

But how can you say that? If you go through all the maps available on the "leak" you do get a bit of gameplay, just a taste. You do see a bit of the AI working the way Vavle displayed at E3. It certainly is not was shown at E3 but its enough to see that certain elements are completed. Applying missing textures is simple to do. Whats missing? The continuity of a single player missing, right? Well, why would Valve want you to have that? Why not just give you a teaser of what to expect and then let you imagine what the final product will be like.

Take a look at e3_phystown, once the map loads open the CONSOLE and type IMPULSE 101, then enter, then GOD. This way you will have almost all weapons and in GOD mode. Go to the third floor of the building (on your left, the only one you can enter). Once your on the thrid floor, blast the wooden planks with your RPG and take a look at the AI of the baddies below you. They are defently reacting to your mode of attack and are aware of their surroundings. Watch as they see the beam coming swinging over.

Let me know what you think! Don't forget that what was "leaked" is most likely a snipet of what Valve had. At least thats my opinion on it.

This is true, but, as it was not compiled by Vavle themselfs (for obvious reasons), it could be that the hacker/leaker didnt put everything together right (im no programmer), and put it together very shoddily :\
