Oh, I buy my games, but that's just where I get my back-ups because I never play the original disc. Don't wanna break it on accident. I don't have a cd burner so I gotta download my backups.

it's a free country buddy, get used to it. It's perfectly legal to download anything you already own. I don't distribute my software, that is illegal. I've not admitted to any wrong doing so back off and don't take what people say out of context.

i understand..dont go all  on me! :P

And as far as I know the rules say that you may take backups of your games on store it on you hdd. But not even THINK about downloading it because the file you download is someone else's backup that he decided to distribute. Your downloading a file that may not be shared with other people, summa summarum, its illegal to download backups from ed2k/kazaa etc. community.

besides...relax! ;)

first, it's legal to have backups of games you own in any form whether it's cd's, or your hdd.
second, how do you think it's legal for people to download SNES ROMS that they own on cartridge? you can download a PC game you already own just as a snes rom. if you already own it, you have the right to back it up in any way you can as long as you don't distribute it.
period.

besides...i am relaxed. B)

I see your point perfectly, but im not directly offending you.
It is completely legal to have backups of your game, if oyu amde them yourself. Because the so called "back-up" you download from the internet is being shared by another user(s) who is doing what he/she isnt allowed to do: Distribute the back-up.
I understand the part about back-ups for SNES because it cannot make back-ups of your SNES games by inserting the rom into the computer (doesnt fit in cd-drive ;) ) and its a old console and the dont make games for it anymore (me thinks).

But concerning pc-games, xbox-games and etc. it is illegal to download other persons back-up cd's because they are shared illegaly.

hmm... I'm not completely sure about that.. but say you're right, what if I own a game that the cd is so scratched it won't run/install, and it's nolonger being sold and the only way to get it is ebay for $40+? For example, Final Fantasy VII for PC.. Which is my current problem.. How can I legally get it working? Do I have to send my cd's back to EIDOS or whoever? Please fill me in on this.

BTW, I apologise for any mistakes, I recently had a knife go through one of my fingers so I can only use one hand right now..

sorry about your hand.
anyway, that depends onwho scratched the cd. But not matter what scratched your disc you can jsut make something up. You call the company that published the game and present your current problem for them. I am 99% sure that all game companies have copies of all games theyve ever published. They happen to have back-ups to you know.

But if they NOT are in possession of the game you request (the 1%), then I dont care what you do to get the game.

Jubb, You are really stupid... Its illegal to download any game that is not freeware or open source. Simple as that. Take a look at the EUA in a games manual. You are allowed to MAKE your own backup but in no right are you allowed to distribute it or download someone elses back up. PLUS if you "lend" your friend a game you must hand over ALL the original material that was included in the game.

So if you friend wants to play Counter-Strike and you give him your CD-Key you must also give him everything else that came with Counter-Strike.

Roms are Illegal plain and Simple. Games do not become public domain till 50+ years (after the copyright expires).

Don't try to tell me otherwise because I AM A DEVELOPER!

Man, I thought pirates were just thieves, didnt know they were stupid also...
