I think its a good choice.
KotoR features graphics u would expect to see in fps, the gameplay is fast, the rpg elements aren't too difficult to understand, the story will most likely make u an addict to this game and the sound, well, its quality and richness is stunning (especially on a good 5:1 or 6:1 system, or with very good headphones, like the Plantronics DSP 500 for example).
Great game. Great choice. (My oppinion )

yeah, kotor is an awesome game. you can read my review of it if you haven't already.
the dungeon siege games can be a decent introduction too, since they focus more on action than managing a lot of stats. diablo 2: lord of destruction is a classic, neverwinter nights is great too, and so is morrowind. i've played and finished each and every one of these, including all expansions and addons. lots of fun

kotor is definitely worth going for. i'm not an rpg player. i tried neverwinter nights and morrowind and the like, but really couldnt get into them. however, when i picked up kotor i couldnt put it down until it was finished.
definitely well worth your money

Try Gothic 2, it's much less hardcore as KOTOR, and also have quite good graphics.
I'm in the same situation as you, only i played RPG's before, i'm now trying Baldurs Gate 2, i love it but it SOO dificult(a hardcore RPG)
But KOTOR is not bad at all, but its still quite an dificult RPG( i finished about 80% and then dont get further).
