what do you guys think the level of realism will reach in next gen and after, pc hardware and consoles, will they eventually make you part of the game itself, VR style, will it just get to the point where even the minutest detail is recreated like for a beach every single grain of sand with its own seperate physics model??
maybe not the graphics itself but the way you actually control it? will you use your brain as a direct controler to make your character do whatever you wish, run, walk, saunter, dance, or even scratch his scrot...mwahhahaha..lol
will the medium in which you see the game change? imo i think this is the major thing keeping back games and movies, no matter how good the graphics you will still be watching on a flat 2D medium...the TV, i think this needs to evolve, headsets like VR, or maybe a full 360 degree tv, you can look right around you (imagine that playing doom 3, you would be shitting yourself) or playing a racing game in car view, having to look at the wing mirrors and rear view, that would kick ass..
whats everyones view on the matter

i think individual grains of sand are not gonna happen. ever. closest thing would be some sort of illusion that appears to be grains, but will never be actual little grains in the game. there are many ways to make things appear more realistic than they really are such as bump mapping. you can look at a wall (in the game) and it may look like it's made of stone with little holes and ripples in it, but when youl ook at it from the side, it's perfectly flat. i'm sure more ways will be made to make things look more real, and save on poly count.

i reckon anything could be done eventually with computers what i want is cheap good quality virtual reality (better than any big screen)
but then they'll bring out horror games much worse than doom 3 by then and very gory and detailed and we'll all be shiting ourselves... I CAN'T WAIT!

it's hard to say, but at least for quite a few more years the advancements will probably be in the video cards, not necessarily in VR, 360 degree TVs, etc. Real-time rendering has come a long way, especially looking at Unreal 3, but in terms of polygon processing it has a long way to go until it can be called photo-realistic.
During the next years we'll see even cheaper plasma and lcd screens, and the quality will improve. People want these because they take up less space, for one thing, and that's probably why 360 degree monitors will be a tough thing to sell. You could of course buy several plasma screens and have them around you, but it won't be cheap, and you'll have a hard time finding a game that's compatible. I'm sure some companies will try things like this, but it probably won't be for a few years - after plasma and such has become more common.

i just can't see myself actually turning my head to look around for something in a game. I think it's more convenient to look with the mouse. besides, you can choose your mouse sensitivity s and i for one always have high so really i can turn around faster in a game than i could in real life and thus defeating the purpose of spending $2000 on 6 lcd monitors to surround myself with.

the point is that it's supposed to be more life-like, in which case looking with a mouse would be less realistic than using your head. im not sure if i would want this in a "twitch shooter", but in for instance racing games it could be interesting
