Texture Comparison

Since I couldn't actually take game screens and say, compare the graphics(people could too easliy take sides) I took a sample of the grass textures(from a screenshot) of the games, sorted from 1(best) to 6 (worst) do my estimates of best to worst seem acurate?

EDIT: ill name the games When People have a good order of best to worst
(2 and 3 can be flipped I guess, and maybe 4 and 5, but would u guys agree the top 3 are a better generation then the bottom?)

2, 4, 3, 1, 5, 6 will probably have to be my vote

grass can be a lot of things, because you do have rocks, lighting, and whatever else involved, so my vote is from best to worst

:stupid: 1 is really washed up textures with cardboard grasshalms on it and 6 could get away as everything...

PS: now that's real grass

Ill give u guys a hint, 1 is 3 with actual grass(2d grass that sticks out of ground, not grass thats in the ground texture) laid on top of it, its not a top down texture, its an ingame screen

heres another image of it(the 2d grass that sticks out(im on a downhill slope looking up and crouching, however the game should be pretty apparent now)

all are cut outs from ingame screens when looking strait ahead, not on the ground(so they are angled)

My texture is the onyl actual top down texture, 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 are all ingame screens

Gimme some more feedback, 3 more posts(please don't post the game guesses) or about 15 minutes and ill post what games they are.

Heres another Angle of Image 1, which is really image 3 with foilage, and foliage is 2d grass that sticks out of the ground... heres an angle to show u

EDIT: Take that all those people who think HL2 is great and crisp... its not as great as most games, Please, Notice, NO ONE thought it was the best, or anything better then beating the orignal CS, don't give me crap on how im not being fair. don't go back and say, but 5 is the best, because a truelly anoynomous Survay says otherwise.

Looking at the High Res Bink CS Source and HL2 DX9 videos, HL2 looks no nicer then UT2k4 or Stalker(the reflections are psuedo real-time, and are like Ut's) as for a higher res grass... this is from the 1024x768 CS source(when its stbale and not moving, so its near 0 comrpression)

Still not as good as Halo, or UT2k4, around the lines of CoD/HL2 new screen

i assume everyone saw that 1 had foliage that sticks out, but 3 is farther from the screen which makes it look more high-res and with more detail.

nice point about the grass textures though, but you boys should remember that hl2 introduces quite a few dx9 effects that not even doom 3 uses (high definition range lighting will probably be the coolest - check the directx 9.0c examples, or the earlier hl2 vids to see). im curious how the nvidia cards will handle it though

Yes, heres the trick though, Doom3 Is primary OpenGL and OpenGL2, thats 1 main reason it runns better on Nvidia(nearly all newer engines and DirectX games run better on ATi, as their dx is very good, but their OGL needs some work)
As for nvidia vs ATi On D3 and HL2, i have 2 very good links

Also heres another thing on ATi's Their Default Driver settings are the highest in the market, all Texture and Mipmap are on default set to highest and quality not performance.

As For HL2, it is (like the rainbow six games) optomized for ATi, why?
Because in incital benchmarks, ATi came out on top, unlike a lot fo the meant to play on NVIDIA things which really are just paid avertisements(ie Deus Ex2 and UT2k4 both have meant to play on nvidia, but play better and look nicer on ATi cards, don't eblive me? ill show u the benchmarks(don't ask for it unless you really don't belive me, im a pretty busy person))

EDIT: As for the lighting comment, Yes the lighting is nice, but overhyped, first, stalker can do the same thing, second, the lighting has nothing to do with the reflections you see on the metal in that video, its just the light softenting(which looks nice) the reflections are just angled reflections which can be seen in Ut2k4 or D3. (also if u wanna see some really good skybox effects, check out Ut2k4, its the most amazing ive ever seen)
