when computers have the power to do so, the engine would still not be able to support as much as an engine that is only concerned with running one screen would be. Â*its then not economically advantageous to have the engine because people (mainly "hardcore" gamers who make up the majority of the game buying population) would much prefer to be able to have the engine with all the bells and whistles that looks awesome, rather than having a scaled down engine with the novelty of having split screen.

Coop (like Team Death Matches, etc) are commonplace now, and are quite easily set up overmultiplayer. Â*There is also the problem with dual controllers (not sure how USB/firewire/whatever next technology is works with handling 2 controllers at the same time) using the processor.[/b][/quote]
Ya know, that's exactly what I was talking about with "technologically possible"... Console first person shooters already have split screen mode for coop/multiplayer games... The most recent and graphically advanced example I've seen lately was the Red Faction 2 trailer. Have a look at it if you've got spare time... I'd have to say that the game looks really cool, and it's still split into FOUR different screen sections, for four players playing at the same time. Now, if PS2 can do that, I refuse to believe that PC can't.

Now, when you're talking about "Coop (like Team Death Matches, etc) are commonplace now, and are quite easily set up overmultiplayer. ", you're talking about REGULAR multiplayer, not co-op in singleplayer mode. Show me one FPS that supports co-op mode in singleplayer, and I'll admit that I am wrong Â*

The problem with controlers shouldn't be a major one, just because there are lots of different controller options available nowadays. Firewire/USB/etc... already works fine on PCs, take BomberFUN as an example of a recent game that supports up to 8 players at once, including controller support (not keyboard) support for up to 6 players.

Now imagine that you've got a TV ouptut card, a few extra controlers and a game that supports co-op singleplayer... Wouldn't that be really fun to get together with a few buddies and kick some monsters' butt? Hell, yeah. I'd be the first person to run to store and buy a game that supports all that. Â*

err... there have been several games to do this. Hidden and Dangerous is just one that comes to mind. I played many a coop mission of Rainbow Six with a friend of mine.

The real truth is that games have stopped doing this in the past year or so. Most everybody wants to frag each other, not work together to frag bots.

Guess I'll take my words back... Although I never did see singleplayer coop missions in any of R6 games that I've played, but then again probably I just wasn't paying attention... I'll go fine the CD and fire up R6 now and try to get someone to play with me

Here is my problem with split screen fps, if it is coop no problem but if you are against each other, then you can se where the other one is! It is very hard to snipe when your oppenent is seeing the same thing you are. Racing maybe th only genre I can think of that split monitor would work well on.

Even racing games are annoying in split screen IMO. They can be fun, but the restricion on your POV is, to me, pretty damn frustrating.

I don't know if consoles still do this (I don't think they do) but the PS had a link option that allowed you to vs someone on another TV. That was FUN!

Used to get a friend over, put 2 tv's so that we couldn't see each other's screens and have it out in some real nasty NASCAR races.

I don't mind the split screen for racing so much, but for just about anything else, I need 2 puters
