Rather than trash this thread with this subject, I thought I would let folks rant about their pet game here.

My vote btw, is Zork.

Why? Because it was the game that proved it was possible to make money publishing entertainment software. And thus we are here arguing these points today

There were a lot of them... Some we sadly won't remember/know. For example, who made the first RTS game and what was its name? I'm pretty sure there was something before the original Dune...

Wolf3d, for inventing the FPS genre... Half-Life, for its revamped Q2 graphics engine and innovative gameplay/storyline...

There are probably more... I don't think you could say that one game did it all... A lot of different games made the gaming world a better place for us to be (live?) in.

Quake
Wolf3D may have been the first FPs, but Quake made it mainstream, as well as the network code that revelutionized multiplayer.

You're wrong. Doom made it mainstream

Nah, the most revolutionary game was Chris Crawfors "Thrust and Betrayal".
The game was about social interaction in a telepathic society of aliens where you must figure out the personality and psychology of the NPCs and it really worked! The dialogue system was iconic and very easy to use.
It is depressing to see such otherwise great games as Neverwinter Nights that falls way behind this old eighties game in social interaction.
