Doom3 looks amazing, that's for sure, but still some people thinks it doesn't looks THAT AMAZING just because of its low polygon counts. They often make comparisons with Unreal tournament 2004 or Farcry. Have you thought what could happen if you put realtime shadows in a high polycount game like Unreal tournament 2004. Man, it will run like hell.
The guys at Epic are going to use bumpmapping and other tricks because they have realized that the next thing to put in a engine are the shadows, and the current hardware cannot affort a high level of poygon counts. (Still, I want to see the Doom3 engine games, let's say, three years in the future. Man they're gonna look gorgeus. Just compare the Quake III Arena graphics with Call of Duty, and you'll see what I mean) The Doom3 engine is so flexible that some people are not only modding the weapons, but the rendering itself. That guy, Junkguy, made a very interesting modification: Parallax mapping. This technique can really make a game look gorgeous and its something Unreal engine 3 its going to have. NOW TO THE POINT (I'm sorry, I had to say all that) : What kind of mod do you think could make the Doom3 engine make a big step forward?. I say gimme SOFT SHADOWS and I'm in heaven. What do you think? |
