the source engine's source code was stolen.
stolen not as in they lost it to someone else but in the fact that someone from the outside managed to get a copy for review.

this supposedly delayed the game in the fact that Valve had to change some some of the core technology since the original source code was viewable by hackers or other individuals who may use their technology against them (competitors, cheaters, hackers, virus/worm developers and so forth).

my guess is they delayed the game as it simply was too far from finished and the code theft was a believable excuse.

With how long it's taken to be released since the leak, it's very obvious it wasn't near completion at the time they said it would be. They did lie, the one person knew they did (anonymous leaker), and he did what I would've done: he told everyone that they were blatantly doing that to get a lot of hype for it. I definitely would've stuck it to them, too. No matter how much I might like them.

lol, i don#t know if Valve ever said they have to delay it because of security issues on sites of cheating and such. but it would be funny consider that they ignored all call for anti cheater mesures back then. Even a half a year back when they invited all the mags for a preview show they had almost as much as they had in the leaked source. say basicly nothing more. You think that they have more now?, Yeah, they do. now they made the barrel fall to left instead of to the right....watch it in the next clip. it's the next big thing in game history...barrels that not only fall down but fall down indapendently of the direction....

Heh, it's funny how everyone loves to attack the developer (that as a matter of fact is making a brilliant game), based on rumours, assumptions, and lack of official information... "Gabe lied, Valve doesn't give a shit about us, let's stone them (after we warez their game, of course)"... somehow deep inside I don't believe that Gabe is such an evil guy that eats babies for breakfast and lies to people because it makes his ego grow.... Let's just hope the NDA will be waived once the game is in stores, as Valve guys will probably have lots of interesting stuff to tell us once VU has no more power over them.

Valve only stated the SDK would be released "before" the retail (since retail still hasn't hit the stores yet this isn't a lie)

Okay, its a shitty computer, so what? I put it there to give people an idea of how I play my games and at what detail and perfromance i can push on it. Its not for me to say, look at what i got, its more of a, check for reference type thing.

Valve stated tons of things about the SDK.

Itll be released right after E3

I never downloaded it, However there is more then enough evidence from people that did to say that valve said they had AI, but when you played it, it was scripted, i never tried it, but people say thats what it was, ill take their word for it.

Source code theft was in Early October.
Viendi deleied it but valve kept saying they could make it on the old dates, when from what peopel say about the leaked alphas, it wasn't at a playable state.

which will be in 2005 at the earilest. Court dates are set for June 2005, preliminary hearings are uhh.. on friday!
