I'll have to pimp Soldiers: Heroes of WWII, has both RTS elements plus direct control for that more satisfying "blow a guys head off" feel. Also as a non-WWII game DOW is very sweet, playing it quite a bit at work.

dawn of war is not the coolest RTS ever, by a long shot.
if you play games for realism then why are you playing RTS games? Codename: Panzers is a great game and fun, more realistic than many other RTSs but ditches the crappy realism for better fun. Red Alert is one of the greatest RTSs ever made, generals was not the game it should have been and it single handedly destroyed the C&C fanbase. the best RTSs that were ever made by type are C&C: contemporary Warcraft: fantasy StarCraft: SciFi Age of Empires: Historical each of these games has either created a extremely popular series or has a dedicated fanbase and still draws crowds (StarCraft) as for StarCraft strats and tactics try some of the fansites like http://www.starcraft.org/strategies.asp?mode=toc&cid=1 or here http://www.infoceptor.net/strategy/starcraft/ they will give you a boost in play skills for sure. as for me i am a big fan of Rise of Nations. it's coming very close to becoming a classic RTS. i wasn't a big fan of blitzkrieg for some reasons that it's own publishing company gave, units were too small, gameplay was too realistic, and just genuinely not appealing to a mass market. i wasn't invited to the Blitzkrieg 2 beta (grrrrr) but i will be getting a preview of it or i'll have a few loose screws fall out of my mind.l as for scale Blitzkrieg is awesome but too much scale and scope leaves you with a niche crowd of fans instead of a swarm of fans that a less realistic more fun game would bring to you. i expect Blitzkrieg 2 to have more fun and less realism as realism doesn't sell video games. TGE
