hi, im german , so dont laugh about my english...
A few minutes ago my steam has started , for the last 2 days, and yesterday and today it has downloaded only a few mbytes..
But now i got the information, by finishing the preload ,,,, Preload DONE """ The Preload of Half life ´2 has done !!
You could play the game when it is available, or you could play the game at once when half life 2 made available...
By examinig the Directory of of the steam files, i could see that the preload of half life 2 is about over 3 GB...., but i really dont know if it include all the files i could see, perhaps there are some files who dont relates to the hl2 game.
but the maps ,, base config,.... share,...., and other are about 3,4 GB..so its really big,,((( i really must say that the preload speed of half life 2 is very very fast, i got always best connections))))
I also get the information ,, that the files getted """ free,, the files áre now opened, or they made free.....? i dont know... i only want to play right now...!

A lot of people here don't like Steam but I think for a large number of people it works really well. Valve should have sold the Steam technology to a games publisher like EA or VU so that a lot more games could be bought on Steam instead of just Half life 2.
I think Half Life 2 downloaded in under 20 minutes for me which seemed really fast.

Nope, from start to end, all stages. roughly 20 minutes maybe a bit more. If your network is configured right ie: you're not in a college or behind some heavy firewall Steam works really well. That being said it's not for everyone but it's at least another channel for people to get their games legitimately.
