It's an entirely different experience from FS2004.
WW2 stuff obviously didn't have all the controls that modern jets do, but this kind of flight sim is far more demanding on your knowledge of aerodynamics and how to get the most out of your aircraft. I don't think I've ever been busier in a game than when I'm in a heated dogfight in IL2. I guess the answer is yes and no.

on Expert you don't even have to worry about your enemies sinse you're to busy trying to stay in the air. The best turbolences in any flight sim.
PS: this is probably the only game right now where it doesn't matter on what server you're on you'll never find some dumb n00b. This kind of game is to demanding and you have to be a dedicated gamer to get somewhere.

it would be no good if I give you my controll configs since I change alot of the standart settings as well. most people I give them have to change it eventually to their flying style and habbits. but one tip is that you set all the stuff you need for start and land on the number-keypad on the right side of your keyboard. I have accel on my stick so I dunno how yours is.
all the manuel stuff you can set on your actually keyboard keys since you will hardly use manuell but at least you got them set. Engine Start I set to Enter and Bail Out to BACKSPACE. I try to keep the important stuff close to the right side of the keyboard because I have my stick on the right side of the keyboard. keep the mouse for looking or use TrackIR if you got the extra doe.... TrackIR is an Extremely usuful tool/hardware and not only a gag. you'll know when you have to keep an eye on your enemy while doing some oldschool dodging madness. i play only in Cockpit view, if you also use the external view you might not need it....But seeing all upcomming racing and flight games using TrackIR i think it is worth the invesment....if you like those games and know you're gonna play them alot. oh yeah, i set manuel landing gear up and down on the arrow keys...found it very easy sinse I don't have to hunt the buttons on the main kayboard. you Stick should be setted with everything that has to do with weapons on your airplane and if you got extra buttons left use it for next/previous enemy/friendly.

Here you can download videos of the TrackIr in use, I watch some and they don't really show it very well but you can see it in action. this is one of the devices you have to use for yourself to see how awesome it is.
