My half life2 doesn't seem to like my 5.1. I have to change it to 2 speaker when its already auto detected that i have a 5.1, i get no sound at all when its on 5.1. I've contacted their support bout 4 days ago but got nothing. Any suggestions?.
I have a SB Live 5.1 card.

go to the configuration menu in windows, then click on the audio icon, this will bring up a new screen, then in the bottom go to advanced under speaker-configuration.
then under the speakers-tab, change the configuration to 5.1 surround, you will see the image changes to a 5.1 surround
i dont know if the terminology is alright, because i have the dutch version of windows xp :P :
(here i have to go to : configuratiescherm, geluids en audioapparaten, geavanceerd, luidsprekers-tab, 5.1 surroundopstelling)
i hope it helps, normally when you have configured 2.1 in windows (can also be automatic), it will automaticaly change back to that configuration in HL2.
so you won't be able to play in 5.1 settings...

Err, don't really know what your trying to tell me. The only way HL2 has sound is if i change it to two speakers in the audio menu, which automaticly chages it in windows aswell which i have to change back to 5.1 after playing hl2. I need to know why it isn't playing any sound at all when its on the 5.1 setting inside hl2 audio menu B)
Thx anyway mate.

Go to "Control Panel" click on "Sounds and audio Devices" and under the "Speaker settings" chose "Advanced" and select 5.1 Layout for speaker.
That should do it.

Hmmm, people arn't getting my point, i go inside the game, the valve logo comes up and i can hear the sound for that on the 5.1 settings, then it gets into the game menu and theres nothing, no sound at all, i've tried it in the game, ive looked in windows audio settings incase its changed somthing, nothing, everything should be working, i then go into the HL2 audio menu and select 2 speakers(which it changes in the windows settings aswell) and all sound comes on except its abit jumpy at times. After playing half life 2 i have to change back to 5.1. I shouldn't have to do this, what could be interfeiring?.

start hl2.exe (not the exe that starts the steam loading process) with the -console paramter (make a shortcut with "c:\blah\hl2.exe" -console). When it loads the console should pop up and it should say whether it auto-detected 5.1 speakers. If it doesn't pop up you need to press the ~ button, but in my case I had to change the regional settings (keyboard in particular) to USA, because then I could press the button below Esc to bring up the console.
