Pc gaming dying

Im a pc gaming enthusiast (who can check email well enough!), but for me the cost is definitely a problem for the pc. I bought bits for a gaming pc which lasted about 2 years before showing signs of age. It would cost me about £500 if I wanted to upgrade (CPU, video, mobo etc), with only the audio and other components really lasting me. Im starting to think thats its not worth it, despite all the well developed and intelligent games on the pc. How much is anyone really prepared to spend on better quality games anyway?

Consoles arent for dumbasses tho. The popular nature of them however is the reason why there is so much rubbish involved like many popular things. There will always be the option to play games at a desk, with a keyboard and mouse, online, and a decent set of headphones, but the cheap living room option will always be more popular and therefore cheaper, and thats what developers will more often go for. PC Gaming isnt dying its just getting more expensive!

Ok, consoles aren't for dumbasses, but lets just look at a couple trends here:

Fighting games, which are twitch based and more "arcade" -- Consoles FAR better than PC.

Racing games, SIM oriented, that require lots of real skill at driving a car correctly at high speed -- PC murders consoles, but they've got some good titles too... GT4 = Best racing game EVER.

Racing games, arcade oriented, twich skills and ardrenaline over realism -- Consoles and PCs very similar, but consoles have the edge. (Burnout 3 anyone? Best racing game EVER... except GT4!)

Strategy games -- Consoles have very few of any sort. RTS, TBS, etc. PC owns this category by a factor of 100.

Action games, non-FPS -- Console takes it easily.

Action games, FPS -- PC has far better titles, and much better controls and graphics on the titles it shares with consoles.

"Deep" RPG games that let you freedom to do whatever -- PC wins just cause it has Morrowind and Gothic 2. Consoles have nothing (except Morrowind was ported to XBOX with acceptable results)

"Shallow" RPG games that might have a great story but are totally linear -- Consoles win just cause they have Chrono Trigger and Cross, the Final Fantasy series, KOTOR (which started on XBOX), and other such games.

Adventure games -- PC blows console away. This has and will always be the PC genre that consoles can't touch. Pity most games in this genre are total garbage.

Thats just a few categories, I'm sure we can think of more. My point is, look at who wins which category... Console dominates at twitch games and games that require less input, time dedication, and, if not intelligence, then active thought processing. Can we agree on that much?

Yis, agreed. However, the reason for this is mostly just to do with the different nature of the two forms, like where yu play them, how much time yu have etc. Rather than one type of game being better than the other eg twitch vs skill, both fill gaps in the market as needed (or demanded).

What I was saying was that I, a pc gamer, might choose a nextgen console over a pc upgrade next time round, just because the cost solution suits me better, even though I might lose out by not being able to play amazing games like stalker etc. And looking at the market, most people agree. Its unfortunate, but theres a viscious cycle which keeps pc gaming expensive and less popular, and vice versa. But its only to do with the nature of the two forms. Your other two reasons, rationalisation and impatience are valid but dont really apply as much in my circles. Basically, the upgradability of the pc is both its blessing and its bane.

why is everyone getting pissed off at each other? (im sorry if someone has already posted an answer but i couldnt read all of that)

i enjoy both console and pc games. price never really an issue with the way you can trade in your old titles nowadays
BUT the pc is definetly better, why, simply ease of play, you can have many many more keys for controlling than you ever will be on a console.
pc one flaw, cost of hardware.

console the way things are going EA will buy everyting and ruin it, they add teahatty soundtracks and wanker dj's to every game they release. (burnout 3)
EA just rape the licenses af classic games (see goldeneye) an amazing game, but ea sucked the life out of it and released the teahat rogue agent *retch*

i really dislike EA

you will always have the online play better on a pc than consoles except TS:FP which IMO is the best console fps now that its been released

no-one is an idiot for liking one over the other, so why flame people for saying they enjoy consoles more than pc or vice-versa?
