It mostly describes the contents of the patent, the patent is for real. We can already read brainwaves, perhaps this could be the next step.

QOUTE: "If the method described by Sony really does work, it could have all sorts of uses in research and medicine, even if it is not capable of evoking sensory experiences detailed enough for the entertainment purposes envisaged in the patent."

No matter what the outcome, this looks like a possible win win situation.

Elizabeth Boukis, spokeswoman for Sony Electronics, says the work is speculative. "There were not any experiments done," she says. "This particular patent was a prophetic invention. It was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."
Prophetic invention?? In other words they 'baggsy'd it, hehe! Sony are such bastages!

I reckon it'll take a while before we get past potential safety issues for this one tho! There'll be more than just epilepsy warnings for sure, heh!

Hehe, 'safeties off Mr Data'. *cough-geek-cough*

They probably wouldnt make one that could make you feel fear or pain tho, noone would buy it (unless they had masochistic tendencies)! They'd only be able to do vague sensory stuff, like tastes and smell. It'd have to be really accurate to do visual and auditory stuff, plus everyones brain is slightly different in the positioning of things.

Id just be worried about overstimulating specific areas of the brain, a bit like image burn on plasma screens. Theoretically can lead to hallucinations when not using it! Course they dont really know how they'd do it exactly yet, but Sony dont want to take any chances, hehe.

This is really intersting! If it works it will rock! But like you said it can be dangerous. But if they could make you feel pleasure I would buy one right away!!

Then they can make crapgames and manipulate your brain in to thinking it's awesome.
Smart.
