So I downloaded Battlefield, its great fun and I really enjoy it, but I am a little frustrated with the amount the game hitches when I look into an area with a lot of combat or tons of geometry. What part of my hardware is causing the game to hitch like that? The game runs at really good fps even in high intensity combat situations, but if i look into the middle of the map from the MEC runway, the game stutters for half a second and resumes play. It is very similar to the stuttering found in HL2: Source, but it seems to be more noticeable only because I go from 60-80fps, then down to like 10 for less than a second, and back up to 60-80.... My hardware configuration is as follows:

Pentium 4 2.8ghz Prescott @ 3.15ghz, OCZ 1 gig DDR400(CAS2) RAM, Abit AI7 i865, Raidmax Scorpio 420w, Seagate 7200rpm 120gb hdd, 16x dvdR drive, ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (400/355, yes I know its overclocked, and no that is not the reason the game doesnt work flawlessly, it works worse when its set to normal speed)

I was going to go to Fry's to pick up 1gig OCZ ddr400 RAM (Identical to the RAM I have) for the small price of $59USD, but I was not sure if the increased RAM would fix the stuttering...Is it my graphics card or my RAM that is causing the stuttering in the game?

Check out the "read me" that comes with demo, they recommend a 256mb video card, I'm thinking thats your problem.
I have a 9800pro 128mb card and it did that when i had all details set to high, so I kept res. @ 1024 and put all details to medium, now it runs mint ans still looks very good........

Was thinking it was maybe due to exchanging texture data in and out of the video memory from what you said.

How much ram does your 9800 Pro have? And what settings do you run on BF2? Have you tried lowering texture detail to see if it cures the problem?

Im running a similar setup to you (1gig RAM, 2.8GHz etc tho not OCed) but my 9800 Pro (@380,350) has 256mb on it. I can get my settings to full and 2xAA and havent noticed any hitches yet.

1gig system RAM should be enough, but more and more games these days are requiring lots of video memory eg ultra high setting on Doom. Hope this helps

It might not be his video card. I have a 6800GT and have the same problem.
