Mortherboatd problem, need advice.

I've had my computer since febuary, put it together myself, and it's been working fine and i havn't experienced any problems with it at all until today when the chip fan on my motherboard(i have an Asus SLi A8N Delux) has started to make horrible grinding noises. It's probably the bearings on the fan but every few seconds it will spin then sort of try and go the other way and creating a weird grinding noise while doing so. I would have alook except the case that is covering the fan is pinned down by these weird spring things which i don't want to force off incase i damage somthing. I was just wondering if people here could tell me what i should do, is there a way to fix this problem myself? or will i have to contact Asus? or just take it down a local shop?. Hopfully a person with the same board with experience could suggest somthing.

ur gunna wanna open ur case and try to see if something is jamming the fan, or something. or you may have to replace the fan

Yeh man i'm scared to put the side of the case back on incase the fan suddenly stops, i've been watching it and it doesn't happen much but occasionally it will grind. I do think it is the bearings and if so what should one do?.

dont be a chicken logger and open the piece of crap and do what you gotta do.

I had this problem a week ago, and it was just dust in the bearings of my mobo chipset fan. Does your chipset heatsink+fan look anything like this?

Since mine is very similar to that, I pressed down on the silver clips on the side, and twisted them. It brought the hooks underneath the holes so I could pull it straight up and out of my case. I stuck some WD40 on the fan bearings only by sticking the heatsink upsidedown and spraying (and cleaned up the afterspray thoroughly, make sure non of it is on the fan blades or under the heatsink). After I did that I added some new thermal grease underneath my mobo heatsink just because I could, and slid the metal sticks back into the holes 1 at a time. After the heatsink was securely positioned underneath the holes. I plugged it back it and it worked flawlessly. Ill take pictures if you dont understand what im saying...

You might find yourself regretting the use of WD40 in the future. That is oil, which will attract dirt into the bearings.

First locate your balls and remove fan from heatsink. blast out any dust, try to test the fan on another power supply to find out whether the power feed from the host device is faulty. If that's okay, peel back the hub sticker(on back of motor) that has a hole beneath it and apply just one small drop of light oil. Let it soak in for a minute, clean away any excess and re-fix the label. If this hasn't restored the fan to health, it's probably dead. :bucky!:

It is easy and cheap to buy a new fan with NEW bearings! here in the UK a small fan like that will cost £5.00, which I think is about 9 bucks! Don't risk splattering oil and other logger all over the rest of your components! You are creating an unnecessary fire risk aswell!

Replace the chipset fan, we have 5 of those boards where I work and 3 of them do exactly as you said. That motherboard performs very well except for that piece of crap chipset fan.
