I need some advice!

I could be going to the US (Boston) this summer from my homely village of England, and was thinking about buying a 6800GT/Ultra or X850XT-PE while im out there cos its soo much cheaper. One of these should last me another year right? My 9800Pro is showing signs of age now, memory loss, wandering, incontinence, that type of thing....

Anyway i was wondering whether US gfx cards are even compatible with other UK hardware eg mobos, PSUs etc Whether they use different powers, formats (PAL/NTSC..?) etc I dont wanna get all excited for nothing, hehe!

Basically is this idea a  or ? Anyone done this before?

Tanks a bunch!

Awesome! Cos I was looking on newegg and I can get a 6800GT for around $280 (~£160). Then I've found a place I can sell my old 9800Pro for bout £60.

So thats £100 for a 6800GT. Any good?

This way an Ultra would total £180, and an X850XT-PE would be £190. That's without this mail in rebate lark! Are they worth the extra??

Are gfx cards usually a similar price in the shops in the US? Plus have I got anything else to worry about like Tax etc?

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you do not carry it onto the plane. You will pay local USA taxes, but not any for bringing it home. I would go for any of them to be honest, so it is down to what games you play and what system you have to support it. 6600 is probably a good medium.

Thanks GM. Yea, Im pretty much looking for a cheap option to last me the next year, so I'll have no worries about games like Stalker, Prey, FEAR etc. (Big FPS fan!) The rest of my system should be upto it. (2.8G, 1G RAM)

After that I'll hopefully be graduating so shud be able to afford a complete overhaul of my system. Try and build some kinda dual core, SLI beast! Woo!

Cud maybe look into a X800 XL as well for now. Sadly not much cheaper in the US, but i've seen an XL over here in the UK for £150 after I trade in my 9800Pro. I remember paying that much for my old Geforce2!

But yea, as long as I wont get arrested for smuggling gfx cards Im happy!
