I've been looking around the web the past few days looking at details of the P4 2.8Ghz Prescott that I just bought and I've heard a lot of reviews say that they run very hot. What sort of Heatsink and Fan should I be looking at?

dont get that, get a zalman cooler, cu7000 series. Zalman is much cooler and much better and worth the money over that thermaltake. I paid 40, but its extremely quiet and cools very well. I also have a p4 2.8ghz prescott, overclocked to 3.2ghz...

TT's are really efficient coolers, but so damn loud.
Zalman's on the other hand ![]()

Thanks guys im looking at some zalman's at the moment, not only are they quite but they look pretty cool too.
Only thing im a bit worried about is that it says below some of the fans that because they are so big they need mounting holes and might not fit on the motherboard! Has anyone had any trouble with this?

I got the zalman 7700-Cu. Its very quiet and keeps my 2.8G Northwood at ~35degC idle, at the lowest speed (it comes with a speed controller).
You just have to make sure it's compatible with your socket type (not compatible with socket A, 462, 370), and measure whether anything is within its height (over 39mm) or radius (within 68mm). You should be ok for the socket type with your P4 Prescott (usually 478 or 775), but just measure the height and radius out to be sure. Most people are ok unless they have an unusually small case. If you're ok with the size restrictions, get one! I found it a little tricky to install, but it comes with instructions! ![]() |

Thanks for that, I have been looking at zalman fans and have found this one which seems to be very similar to the 7700 http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?...?articleID=1359 is it worth buying if I can save some money by getting it? Thanks for all the help so far.

Well the 7000s are smaller, so you havent got the size restrictions...but they're also not compatible with 775 sockets so just make sure yours is a 478, cos Prescotts can be both.
Plus they wont be as good as the 7700s at keeping your CPU cool, although they're probably still better than the stock hsf. ![]() I cant say if its worth saving your money and going for the 7000 cos I dont know how good they are, but the difference is only a few quid isnt it? Id go for the 7700 myself if there's room in your case! ![]() |
