I have to order my new video card. By Monday i need to decide on a video card for my PC.
System Specs 3.4Ghz Intel 1024 Ram (2X 512MB) Cable Internet 300PSU (Came with PC which is from Dell, so the PSU isnt that great I imagine) PCI Express Motherboard (With Built in Sound) I have 200 American Dollars to spend not including Tax+Shipping. I have been taking a look at the ATI range, because i have heard that you do not need as high a psu for ATI compared to NVIDIA. I have looked at the X800GT, X800, 6800, 6600GT X800]-128MB(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131419) X800]-256MB(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131416) X800]-GT256MB(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131420) 6600]-GT128MB(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125175) 6600]-GT128MB(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814143026) There is also this from ATI http://shop.ati.com/searchresults.asp?dept_id=39 (PCIE One) I would expect id would have to upgrade my crappy psu to get that running in my pc. Will the 6800 be power hungry, becasue if i have a 300WAT powersupply and it dont work well with the 6800, im kinda screwed. The x800 256MB, should run better with my craptastic PSU correct? Becasue its has lower speeds? (I didnt post one, but their is a EVGA at NEWEGG that is exactly 200$. It should also be noted that i want whatever card i buy to last atleast until spring-summer. Im a poor no working kid, so money is short. If i get the X800 256MB (Not the GT) How much money would i need to spend to overclock(unlock all 12 pipelines). Keep in mind i have the crappy 300W PSU, so would i also have to upgrade that at some point in the future, if i ever tried to overclock? By unlocking all 12 pipelines, how much of a performance boost would i get, for example, i wanna be able to play Unreal Torunament 2007 when it comes out, and not on low settings will overclocking the x800 accomplish this. (I now thats alot of guess work with 2007 in all) Thank you for helping me with these choices. Feel free to give different recomendations then what i have listed, but i can only spend a maximum of 200$, unfortunately i cant save up or anything. |

(The budget is $200, so he can't buy a X800XT odr a 6800U.) As to the actual question: All of the mentioned cards perform well with probably the 6800 and the X800 being the slowest (X800 is about 35% slower than a X800 Pro). If you can, avoid those and go straight for either a X800GT/XL or a 6800GT. These will last until spring-summer with ease. You may want to google for benchmarks for all the four cards. ATi cards do consume less power than nVidia (lates generation both) because they don't need an extra power in. I myself have a X800XL from HIS and I'm happy with it.

I didn't know that ATI made the 6600 & 6800 cards ;)
no, seriously, I have an 9600XT (also from HIS btw) which i'm very satisfied with, and I've heard many great things about ATI so in my opinion, you should stick with that ;) I would think of 2 alternatives: either buy an X800XL and be VERY happy |
