I recently bought an sli mobo and an additional 6800 xt to make an sli computer (ofcourse I already own a 6800 xt to make it ;) )
I am currently looking for a new processor in the midrange price section, because I am also in the proces of pimping the house of me and the missus and can't afford everything at once.
The choice I want some advice on are the:
Athlon™ 64 3700+
Boxed, OPGA, "San Diego"
2200 MHz
1000 MHz
128 KB
1024 KB
€ 129,-
And:
Athlon™ 64 3800+
Boxed, OPGA, "Venice"
2400 MHz
1000 MHz
128 KB
512 KB
€ 149,-
I know the last is way faster but the first has a bigger L2 cache and is alot cheaper. What do you guys think?

i would definately go for the 3800+ if i only had to choose between those two...you can simply get a dual core.....or , get an opteron and overclock it...

I would stick with the first. Mine is close to that and can run every new demo/game on high. No point in spending more money for a hardly noticeable difference

Well, I am not at all planning on spending anymore then neccesary. I think my setup including the sata 2 hd, mx-518, creative 5.1 surround set and X-fi soundcard I already own is just great. Sure it's not the absolute uber top notch but I'm just fine with that. Just need another processer now and then I should be able to run most games at awesome speeds and with awesome sound.

Hmm, its a tight one.
Apparently, the 2.2G San Diego usually OC's to around 2.7-2.8G, whereas the 2.4G Venice tops out at between 2.7-2.9G (on stock cooling). But the larger cache on the SD probably makes a few fps difference in games. So performance would be around the same...
From what I've read, I think the 3700 San Diego OCed has better value than an OCed 3800 Venice. So I'd go for the cheaper SD.

Nice Choupolo, that was exactly what I wanted to hear. Orderd and paid for, now I just have to wait for the package to be delivered so I can install it and get rid of my old agp compo.
