Specs: CPU: (Socket AM2) AMD Athlon™64 X2 5200+ Dual-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology MOTHERBOARD: (Socket AM2)Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe nForce 590 SLI MCP Chipset DDR2/800 MBoard w/ Dual 16x PCI-Express MEMORY: (Req.DDR2 MainBoard)2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory (Corsair XMS2 Xtreme Memory w/ Heat Spreader) VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB 16X PCI Express Video Card Hard Drive: Single Hard Drive (400GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD) SOUND: Creative Labs X-FI Platinum 24-BIT PCI Sound Card I dont know what PSU to get. is 600W ok? or 700W? or even higher? Ive heard that having too powerful a PSU can damage components and i really dnt wanna do that. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

Hey Heretic, welcome to Gamershell!
I've never ever heard of a higher wattage PSU damaging components. For the Geforce 8800gtx, Nvidia says it needs a minimum of a 500 watt PSU, but a 600 watt PSU is recommended. I'd go with a 600 watt PSU on that basis, just make sure its a respected make such as Antec, Hiper, Enermax etc. Can I ask why you didn't choose to go with Intel Core 2 Duo? Not that I'm saying that the AMD X2 5000+ is a shit CPU or anything. |

Hey, thanks for the welcome.
Ive purely decided to go with AMD through word of mouth, nothing more. Ive heard the odd 'I like AMD more' from fellow Clan mates but that is really about it. I would love to hear your opinion on it. My machine will be just purely for gaming so im not sure whether it makes any difference. I realise its an expensive rig however im still working to a budget and i think from what ive seen, AMD is slightly cheaper than Intel. I could be wrong tho. As for KamisoriX i may eventually go SLi, however i dont have the cash to atm and i think the 1 8800GTX will be more than enough for a while ![]() Edit: The PSU i was looking at was Enermax

well, I'm not much into PSu so i have to stick with reviews and what folks tell me.
But AMD has lost the touch for awhile now and Intel is definitly the CPU to go for. better price and power. Besides most, if not all, applications are opt for Intel and then rehashed for AMD. even the 64bit thingy is more than disapointing thinking of that only a few games support it with mostly worst performance. I also have to build a new machine soon but I wait and see what might come out graphic card wise since everything else is pretty set for me. Well, my recommandation is Intel Core2whatever over any AMD. PSU is basicly whatever you like but I need it quiet and the Hiper does a great job...or go for seasonic, they are semi rul0rz ![]() |

Yeah that's a good match. You could get some serious overclocking out of that CPU as well. I overclocked my Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 from 1.86ghz to 3.1ghz for instance . So you get your moneys worth with Core 2 Duo it seems.
lol have a look at THIS motherboard. £250.00 for a motherboard is insane! |
