Microsoft is equipping Xbox 360s with additional cooling to battle the legendary Ring of Death problems.

Gamers are reporting that their repaired Xboxes have a massive new heatsink on the ATI-powered Xenos graphics chip in a bid to prevent problems with overheating and stability. The heatsink features an additional heatpipe and fin section to increase the cooling surface area. However, there are no extra fans.

There is also no word on epoxy - glue is used on the high-end Xbox 360 Elite units to prevent chips from coming away from the PCB should the plastic warp in the heat. We suspect that those lucky enough to get their Xbox back in a working condition aren't keen to start pulling it apart again.

I suspect that thermals will continue to be an issue with the 360 until Microsoft or more than likely AMD/ATI can start cranking out 65nm components that will require far less power and generate less heat. At that point, the Ring of Death should be history. Until then, expect it to keep firefighting, in some cases, quite literally.

Problem is that the damage has already been done.

10.000.000 times too many to be exact according to Vgchartz

Holy Jebus, why did you void your warranty Akadeadly?. You should have just send your threeshitty back and let MS deal with their crappy product. You paid hundreds of dollars for it and for that amount of money it better damm well work.

On another note, since the threeshitty is the only way to play threeshitty games it would mean returning your console would render the games as obsolete. I wonder if you could get finacial compensation for that and in particular for first party games. Gazz sees tons of lawsuits in the near future and yet another way to deal with the worst monopoly in the world of computing

I guess I've been lucky because I haven't had many problems with my Nov 2005 launch 360. The only problem I have is sometimes the disc tray doesn't go in when I press the eject button. A gentle push and it goes in though.
I won another 360 last December from Pepsi Canada, and it failed in less than a month. They replaced it and I promptly sold it. I figured my older one was more reliable so I kept it.
