51GB HD-DVD Triple Layer Discs are being ramped up for production as well as new cheap HD-DVD Players from major new plants in China. Blu-Ray (BD50) discs are 50GB in capacity, so its a bit of a winner for the HD-DVD crowd. Supporters of Blu-Ray have previously boasted about the higher capacity of Blu-Ray to HD-DVD formats as this is has been the only arguement between the two. Apart from this obvious difference, nothing else between the two formats effects the playback of HD content, although you would say that because HD-DVD is the cheaper option, it will be more universally accepted.

It's been nothing but good news for HD-DVD these past three weeks. I thought the Paramount deal would be the last good thing to happen to the format, but since then we've had all the bad news about Blu-Ray yields and the BD1.1 problems, the analyst who convinced Time Warner to go Blu-Ray in addition to HD-DVD has declared Blu-Ray dead, and then last week's news about China backing HD-DVD hardware all adds up to excellent backing from the industries leading players.

So its cheaper and the new triple-layer discs are now more than big enough for 1080p HD res movies AND standard DVD format! The shops are going to be swarming with hybrid DVD/HD-DVD discs and players, probably sooner than you think!

lmfao come on ppl we should all have seen this comming!
this was beta max all over again!
however we all know that the format is not going to last that long hd or blu
something else will show up soon enough to blow them both away
i really want the holographic cubes and disks to take over soon!
just look at the history tho dvd lasted what maybe 5 or 6 years before blu and hd showed up
and blu and hd have been out for what 3 years now so i give it another 4 years tops before the next innovation.

however i must say yea hd-dvd! sony sucks!! the only good products sony has ever made have been stereos
the ps1 and ps2 (ps3 sucks) their tv's, monitors, ect have always been 2nd best to half the other brands out there

Great, so the hd dvd finally made it to it's maximum level of 3 layers and 50 gb. Big deal, the Blu ray is scalable up to 8 layers which in affect means it can carry up to 200 GB. Hitachi has already started pre manufacturing those discs, but I guess your fanboy eyes missed that one when it stared you right in the face. Funny enough current hd-dvd players can't seem to play these 50 gb discs and a firmware update is needed for that. Tough luck if you have bought one already that isn't flashable but since Microsoft supports this format we could have been sure that customers aren't important to the hd-dvd association.

I have to agree with Modock anyway, holographic discs are the future and both hd-dvd and blu ray are just temporary. Still, it's nice to have a player in my PS3 that can actually hold up to 200 gb without having to worry about the fact if my disc will play. I use it for gaming only and am not such a big movie fan anyways.

I personally think that with the ability to stream hd movies trough the net more and more people will choose to invest in a media pc, PS3 with tv tuner, or something similar instead of turning to one of the 2 players. Hopefully this will mean a positive impulse to videocard producers.

I don't care as long as one of them dies fast. This is getting really annoying. Not buying any player until one of the formats dies.

Ummm... its more to do with cost Gazz. HD-DVD is far cheaper to manufacture. Also take into conideration that China, The largest and fastest growing economy in the World is supporting HD-DVD production and NOT Blu-Ray is indicitive of the feeling of movie publishers.

Also, I do not know how on earth you call me a fanboy. I don't own a 360 or PS3...

... PWNED!

No, but you are a fan of pictures of boys :dennis: Fanboy :P

The cost of the Blu ray is simply so high because Sony makes a huge profit margin on it. Indeed, to make up for the high costs of the PS3, you guessed it It can drop easily and will soon.

China, pfff. With the complete lack of education over there they are just going to a country that produces our stuff cheaply like Thailand or whatever. This whole booming economy of China thing is a bubble waiting to burst. The quality of their products doesn't meet our high standards and pretty soon more people will question whether they will continue with a nation that's about to run out of qualified workers and has no level of replacement that they need to maintain growing at this speed. What it boils down too is that a small percentage of people there will make a fortune and the rest of the billion plus people will still be poor farmers.
