According to this article there isn't a dvd drive in the new macbook. Apparently it looks better to have a thin notebook with a external dvd player next to it. This has been done because a dvd player uses too much energy, which makes sense and that's about all that makes sense too me. The rest of this ridiculous apllish (get it? new word) move makes no bloody sense to me at all.

What about you guys?

It makes perfect sense to me. Apple fanboys have been doing without
for years now. No games, no computing power, no security fears (because
it's not worth a hackers time). Next they make them with no cpu, it will
just boot up to the internet and use distributed computing power from
generous PC users :-)

Lol, most likely. Please support the mac p2p project, keep those overpriced underpowered machines running Apple wants people to get a external dvd drive, which really drains the energy out of a notebook. They also want to rely on usb sticks because of their speed, price and storage capability. The three factors of a usb stick it falls short on and Apple relys on those :bucky!:

I don't have an optical drive in my notebook, but it doesn't make it any less useful for my requirements. My notebook is tiny and lightweight and if I want anything installed on it, I either deploy it via TCP/IP or via a shared resource. I don't even use the DVD-RW in my home and work computers very often either. I think the last time I used it was to install Vista, which I now have on the network for PXE boot.

You really can get away without using one, but I should imagine it is a damn sight easier on a Windows network, then a MAC one.

But you are a professional. This notebook is aimed at the general public, of course some will know how to handle the lack of a dvd player, but the majority won't.

I use suse for PXE boot, run a trk and mediacenter with that along some other stuff with my PC and PS3 connected to it. I use Vista as my standard os for gaming.
