I just recently had a new computer put together for some of the upcoming games.

Quad Core 6600
2 Gigs Crucial Ram (until I get 4 GIG)
700W Power Supply
7900 GT video card (until I can get the 8800GTX 768)
Onboard sound (until I can get a X-Fi card)
2405 24 inch Dell Monitor
G15 Logitech keyboard
Running Windows Vista 64 bit

One problem I am having is I can not change the desktop resolution from its current
resolution to a different resolution without the screen going haywire on me.
I attempt to go into BF2 and it wants to goto 800x600 the first time so
when it attempts to change the screen goes crazy then also. The only way to play this game
is to change the screen resolution in the command line to 1600x1200(no idea why my monitor
is in this resolution currently) Now if you do that there is no way to change the resolution
in game. You have to play the game in that res which is 1600x1200. THe other problem
I am having is stuttering issues when I play and I am thinking it is a ram/video issue being
forced to run at this resolution with the current setup.

Anyone have Vista and a 2405 with a 7900 gt? Or even a 8800 GTX (so when I get one) and have these kind of
issues?

Thanks for your time.

The resolutions a game offers, is often depending on those resolutions that can be or are being used. Because nearly no one uses a 24 inch monitor, there won't be an appropiate resolution. And even the best videocard available cannot run a recent game on such a large monitor in, say, a resolution of more than 2000x1600. What you are wanting is simply impossible.
By the way, it is better to use a screen of 20" at most, because that is much more ergonomical / healthy. Do not forget that your sitting at a desk, closely at your monitor. Larger screens are actually meant for media center pc's, in which case the distance to the screen is larger.

Your screen and graphics combination is not the problem. What you must do before going further is ensure you are running the latest graphics driver for Vista x64. Then go into the Nvidia Control Panel (NvCP) and enable Nvidia's own Display Scaling Technology. This means if a game HAS to run in a lower resolution, for whatever reason, then the driver will handle it and scale the game resolution to fit to your 24" behemoth screen. There are a couple of options, so try either one. I like to use 1:1 ratio, but upscaling is quite good aswell.

Oh and I have Vista x64 and 8800GTX and I have no problems other than the occasional crash due to nasty, but improving, drivers from Creative Labs for the Xfi soundcard.

I have ran the monitor on a friends machine that has a 8800GTX and it seemed to run BF2 and Crysis great at the highest resolution with everything on high so I know it is possible. I have the latest drivers from NVIDIA I believe. (Maybe someone can post them to make sure?)

GM2 I try to go into the Nvidia control panel and change anything to do with resolution whether it be display or what you are speaking of and anytime there is a change to what the computer has deemed the default the screen flickers like crazy. I can not change hertz/resolution or even aspect ratio. When I enter BF2 without changing the command line it thinks it should be in 800x600 and begins to flicker. I am thinking it is a combination of the dell 2405 monitor which is not supported by vista/the 7900 card 64 bit Vista itself. Seeing that you have an 8800GTX and you do not have the same problems I am having.

Very frustrating until I get the 8800!

Also which Creative X-Fi card would you suggest getting that has the least problems? I am about to order one later this week.

The X-fi cards themselves aren't the problem in Vista, the hardware works flawlessly. The issues are about the drivers. Very simply put Microsoft has taken a sound feature that was present in XP, and disabled that in Vista. Creative soundcards and all cards for that matter, function less without that. Explaining it all in great detail would take too much time so I hope this explanation will suffice.

On the good side, this week has seen the introduction of new drivers which resolves much of the troubles caused by Vista. Anyhow, regardless of whatever issues the X-fi may have at this point with Vista 64 bit, it can still easily defeat onboardsound and you'd be able to select extremely high sound settings in BF2. The X-fi extreme music is a good card, has all the important functions and is well priced.

Nonsense! Nvidia BETA drivers are just as good as the officially released drivers. This has been the case for years and as far as I can remember they have been pretty damn good since Nvidia started the reference driver program.

mdspeed, are you using DVI or VGA connectivity and have you installed the Driver/INF for your monitor?

I am surely not the computer wiz but I do not believe there is a driver for the Dell 2405 monitor and windows vista. At least I can not find one.

As for the connection I believe I am using the DVI connection. The monitor has three cables. One for power, one usb and one connector (which I believe is DVI) that has multiple pins in it that plugs into the video card.

I just ordered my 8800GTX so I am hoping that this solves my changing resolution flicker problem.
