If you want a 1.5 year old motherboard and a AGP Radeon 9700 in your case and want to dwell in AMD and ATI's past then please do. My friends and I will continue to play on our Core2 Duos and Quads with Geforce8's!
As a student, I can not change my mobo, cpu and gpu every year. I don't use AGP, that is something from the "middle ages". In both my desktop (6200) and my laptop (8400) I use a PCI-e card of NVidia's series. So relax a little, I do not intend to be ignoring your arguments. I know that gamers should use an intel chip, but when I bought my desktop, it was the best I could get for a sub-700 price.
Even if I had the money, it is a waste of money to upgrade a pc that is starting to mainly run Ubuntu. An OS that needs only a third of the power I have now .

Personally, I may soon build an AMD PC so I can review parts for that
side of the street :-)
Make sure it is a quad core then, then it is more worth the investment.

BTW, the GeForce 8400G is dissapointing me. It has sufficient memory in my case, but despite it being from the best series, does it seem to work só slow. At least, I expected "Medieval 2: Total War Kingdoms" to run on high settings. Well it doesn't. I am still troubleshooting, and it would not surprise me at all, if putting the settings on medium turns out to be the only solution. And that is nearly the settings I use on the desktop GM dislikes so much ;)

It maybe an 8000 series card, but it's the super economy card. It's
not gonna run new games on high and it probably won't run many
older games on high either. I'm always telling people to wait and save
up more money but few ever listen. If you can't spend at least $200
on a card then expect to deal with less than stellar performance.

Yeah, but in case of a laptop I don't really have a better choice. But I get your meaning.

My laptop has a dual core edition of the Turion. I know it is not quite a gaming cpu, but most of the times I work on it. That is also the primary reason for buying it, being able to do assignments for my study while being on the move (and to avoid having to (e.g.) search for literature on the university's pcs). That it is running Vista, is the reason I chose for a dual core system. This makes it above the budget class, yet I wished to stay below 1000 euros. The notebook I have was about the best I could get for that price-class.

Yeah if you want value then thats fine, but AMD do not deserve any credit for being cheap.

My personal laptop (non-work) is a Intel Core2 with 2GB of RAM, Nvidia 7300, 120GB HDD, Integrated Vodaphone mobile, Windows XP Media Centre Edition and it can play Company of Heroes just fine! All at a lovely price of £790.00, which equates to €1,100!

Well, your core 2 beats my Turion! My lappy's HDD is one of 320Gb, though . The video card is hard to say, how much difference is there between your 7300 and my 8400G, do you think?
