Default AMD Announces HD3800 Price Drops

Quote:
AMD called us to announce new prices for the Radeon HD 3850 512 MB and HD 3870. In the USA tonight (and everywhere else soon after), e-tailer prices for the HD 3870 should drop from $245 to $189; The price of the HD 3850 512 MB should drop from $199 to $169.

Could this mean that something new is coming in the graphics world? Stay tuned.

Pretty awesome price / performance ratio. My next vidcard upgrade will probably be a 3870x2, but this should be a pretty solid choice for the midrange.

Would it be good choice to put one of them in my good old XP/Ubuntu system?
  • single core Athlon 64 3400+
  • motherboard: MSI Amethyst-M
  • 1024 Mb RAM
  • current videocard: GeForce 6200 SE Turbocache (256 Mb)
Not that I am really up to upgrading this puter, but I wonder if it is of any use to do so.

That's great news. A mate of mine wanted to get a new pc and this will help him in spending more on the case he wanted with his budget.

@Richard. Try including a gig more ram so that wont become your bottleneck in performance (if the processor isn't already ofcourse) Still, it will do wonders as Interman said

Well, changing the CPU would probably mean a new mobo, even if I would stick to AMD. That comparatively old mobo would probably become a bottleneck (just like the RAM as you said).
And renovating half my pc would make sure I have to reinstall 2 OSes and increase my budget quite a lot.

But thanks for the info, you two
