I really don't see that there would be a heat issue with that. I've had vid cards that were really clost to the RAM slots and never caused me any issues. Plus, if you have RAM worries, they do have those RAM fan set-ups you can get these days. Well, they have those fancy heat exchangers like Slay bought for his.

OK, warmth and damage to the card's electronics aren't an isue, as I know now. But still I am glad I asked, because I have a feeling of wanting to learn a lot these days

Oh you might get a nvidia 8800gt or 9600gt, those cards are alot better than the ati/amd HD3850.

afaik are they use more energy and are more (in case of a 8800) expensive. And a 8600 is not an option since it is (afaik) not really that much better then a 3850 (and uses a lot more energy according to some benchmarks *). A 8800GT is also not a card that my rig will be able to use for 100%, since my RAM (pc3200) will be too much a bottleneck afaik. And let's not forget that a EUR 200+ card doesn't make sense in a DX 9 system.
So I won't even mention a 9600
So since it won't make sense in this case to use a GF 8xxx, wish to try out something else and the price (both price/perf ratio and the fact that I 'm not swimming in money), made me decide to flee to AMD.
* that in combination with the fact that ADA4800CD... (socket 939 version of the Athlon X2 4800+) uses 110W in full force is "displeasuring" me a bit

BTW, my plans about the graphics card changed a bit. I think it will become a Club 3D card: Clicky-linky!
Or maybe even: A Sapphire HD 3870 (single slot edition, see SAPPHIRE HD 3870 512MB GDDR4 PCI-E Single Slot Fansink).
Or will the RAM be too much a bottleneck? It's pc3200 DDR1 ...

Since when is the 9600GT more than 200?
And since it's pretty clear the price/performance ratio is better, why still flee to AMD? Being an AMD fanboy doesn't help you at all (just thinking that because of your sig). Why bother with a brand whose winning pricesegment is falling behind also. ;)
Oh and if you do bother with it because of the ram bottleneck which you will hardly notice, get the sapphire one, club3d meh..
Oh and if you want some proof, check this
Drie goedkope videokaarten in de ring geplaatst (1/5) | Tweakers.net (Dutch, so you'll understand). That is why i put the idea there in the first place, else i would have chosen for the hd3850 too

All right, I just thought a 3870 wouldn't make sense on that rather old mobo and with that RAM type.
And I expected the 9600 to be a top card, which was a silly half-ass assumption of mine.
About the p/p ratio: afaik, it was different some months ago. I have not followed the developments when it comes to things like that, that's all.
How come my sig "says" I am a AMD fan boy? The image is about Ubuntu Linux, and the first line is only about the right order from the GeForce modelname suffixes. Nothing bad about Nvidia or Intel
And oh I would appreciate it very much if you don't say things like "so you'll understand", else people think I am either dumb or 10-year-old. English articles are as good as Dutch, as long as they are as well-written as that one .
So it is yet to decide whether it will become a 512MB 8800 GT or Sapphire Radeon 3870 (or a 4 MB S3 Virge DX/GX ). I think I will check for a recent comparation between those two.

Sorry with that, i meant that you would understand, and others wouldn't.
But yeah the amd thing was a half ass assumption of mine (you kinda let me think of gazz ), but yeah in price/performance the 9600gt is better than the 8800gt, but if you have the money

That is Gazz's influence on us I guess
Apologies accepted, btw. And when it comes to the 9600 GT being EUR 200+, that was a confusion with the 9800 as it just appeared (didn't even know about the existence of that one).
