Default Next nVidia cards...

I read nVidia are going to do a die-shrink and are expected to be releasing "new" cards sometime around october - just in time for some games I'm looking forward to - I forget where I read this. I was wondering if anyone had read anything about this.

The GTX 260 and 280 cost 300 and 500 euro. If such a die-shrink comes, they won't be that much cheaper I think.
And I have read in a Dutch computer magazine (PCActive) recently, that those cards draw about 30-50 watts more then ATI's HD 48xx cards. A die-shrink probably makes them a bit less power-hungry I suppose (as long as they won't be OC'ed), but I don't know how big the imp[rovement will be
And ATI's HD 4850 is quite near the 260 afaik, when it comes to the performance. The same article pointed out that a HD 4850 of about 160 euro outperformes a 260 (of about 300 euro) in Crysis. I know that the latter doesn't say much about other games, but still points out that a 4850 is more price/performance wise, imho. A card performing like a 9800GTX and demanding about as much power as a 8800GT, simply is sweet imo.

Yet, I think a die-shrink of the GTX 2xx is something that deserves a warm welcome

There are also rumors of a GTX 280X2 in the works.

I cannot imagine that there is someone with a case that is large enough for that. The normal 280 already is about 30 cm long afaik.

I might upgrade to a new nvidia soon, just gotta see what they do with their prices, hope the new ones offer good competition. Don't want to go with an ATI because of it's ferociously irritating driver support..

Ati drivers are the thing stopping me from getting an ati card. That and the fact that nvidia seems to perform better generally, with ati pipping it by a decent margin in only one or two games ... which I don't play ;-)

There is a Devil May Cry 4 benchmark available. I used that to determine whether it could run on my 2nd pc with a Geforce 6200. And it does not run too well, so I would rather say Geforce 7.

Anyway, the new Catalyst 8.8 drivers are fine Mazling & Magus. And the temperature "complaints" are exagerated as it seems, my HD 4850 (with reference design) barely hits 80 in my case. Though that can be influenced positively by the airflow of my case (CM Centurion 5) and the fact that my resolution stays 1280x1024 at max (because of my monitor).

And good news btw, I am a moderator too since last saturday!

I don't care what anyone tells you, 80dC is screaming hot. My 280GTX's rarely go above 70dC and I'll be buying some Aftermarket Coolers to keep them in the 50-60dC range

Thanks.

And about the card temps: of course 80C is still a lot, but I am happy that it is not 90 or more, like said in certain rumours.
