Darkroom is one of the themes available by default in 8.10 (beside Human, the standard theme).
And I think you messed up because of your dual boot with both Vista and XP. I think you need to do manual partitioning (instead of the other methods the installer gives), thus add an ext3 partition (for Ubuntu) and a swap partition (for the "virtual memory").
I am member of this
Dutch Ubuntu forum, though assuming you're English-speaking you should try this one:

BTW, I have to tell you that in my case I have video playback issues when the Compiz desktop effects (desktop cube, window previews like in Vista, wobbly windows etc.) are enabled. I didn't take the effort yet to solve it, but there is a solution available afaik.
You have the same graphics card as I have, so you may have to check that ubuntu forums to solve issues you may get. At least, you may have to if you want to use the Compiz-Fusion effects (for which you need an additional program). The "basic" looks shouldn't be troublesome.
Anyway, I advise you to take a little safari through that forums before trying anything.
