There's a hole the size of the universe between " not that bad" and good. It's like saying you get accustomed to having sand in your vagina.

Sound shouldnt be bad, but once you tried an Real X-fi @ 96khz with a good speaker setup you know what we mean, cant be explained in words, you gotta feel it

Listen to the first sentence of the clip.
Sound is THE most underrated part on a gaming setup and it's a shame people think getting 2 frames a sec more is worth the sound loss. X-fi cards give approx. 5 frames extra to any system, but that's ignored by people obsessed over graphics. Funny how they hurt themselves with it.

Sounds like X-Fi only makes sense when ya got 5.1 speakers. Or should 2.1 speakers from the 50-100 euro price range (Logitech) be sufficient for a good experience with it? When it comes to sound that is, not the increase in fps Gazz points to.

Well 1st of all you only would get extra fps on a X-fi fatality with 64mb onboard ram, and 2nd if the game supports it also (battlefield 2, 2142 , Bioshock etcetc)
And yes i think if you go purely for a pc speaker setup without receiver, that its about that price range for some quality stuff.
I used to pay 149€ for my oldie T7700 7.1 but omg it was the roxxor, and yes basswoofer was only 15 watts, but sound was great enough in overall
Now i just got 2 pretty standard 2 way sony speakers, set on distance that im sitting from them, but sound quality is amazing, with the good songs/games u get cold shivers
Fiddle and testing with settings can help alot same like tuning a car, put fast parts on doesnt mean its gona be fast, only after tuning it

You guys seem to forget that every onboard soundcard uses the cache of your pc for calculations. A X-fi has chips for that on it's own. The 64 mb added memory on some models is just icing on the cake. By simply not using your cache your system performance alreay gets a huge boost.
Sound performance is best noticed on a decent pair of headphones. I assume most you have one to communicate with friends and /or just to keep the huge amount of noise to yourself instead of sharing it with your neigbours.

We seem to resurrect this same arguement periodically here on GH! Yet it seems the outcome is always the same.
If you have stereo desktop speakers than a dedicated soundcard is generally a waste, because you are more likely to be a non-hardware enthusiast and generally not get too excited about a couple of extra FPS and greater audio fidelity and precision.
If, however, you spend a couple of grand on your PC, then you should have a xfi or equivalent dedicated solution with some nice SPDIF compliant surround headphones or speaker system.
If you argue with this point then you are a complete idiot and should turn away from PCs and own a mac.

So what you are saying is that as long as you don't have 5.1 surround speakers, a pci(-e) sound card is a waste of money.
