The quick and dirty:
Each RAM slot can handle a maximum of 512MB. You need to return the 1GB stick and opt for two or four 512MB sticks instead.
The long-winded explanation:
I've been searching like crazy for info on this mobo as I too have a p4sd-vx. Apparently, it's a special mobo that exists only in a handful of sony PCs. Because of this there isn't any documentation on the board on Asus' or Sony's website. Regardless, I think the problem you're having is one of RAM density. I believe the mobo can only handle a maximum of 4GB of PC2100/2700/3200 of DDR (not DDR2) memory and the most any DIMM (RAM stick) can contain is 512MB (low density).
If I were you I'd kill the 1GB stick and opt for two 1GB (2 x 512MB) kits of Dual-Channel PC3200 RAM.
Lastly, I know several websites say this mobo can handle high-density RAM but honestly, there's just too much conflicting info on the board--Hell, I've had sites tell me it can take DDR2 memory, which is simply not true.
If you find anything else out, let me know.
