Hey all!

Just thought I would share something I did yesterday, by mistake!

I had my pc @ my place of work (Local computer store) Matrix warehouse computers, and I decided it was time it needed a clean again, seeing spiderwebs in the bottom of the case. So took everything out, vaccumed it out, took my 4850 out, and apart, put new heat paste on. and put it all back and everything worked. Kwl I thought til last night! I have 2 power supplies, one for my case fans and lights and one for the hardware, now I usually have both running, but @ night I switch the case lights and fans off, because its noisy!

When I did this my graphics cards temp went way up!! from a usual 40 - 50 oC to about a 110! and my PC switched off suddenly! I did not understand that! so this morning(about 10 min ago) I thought I should make sure I plugged the graphics card fan in, and alas I forgot to plug it in. So good news is my card still works! PHEW! and my case airflow must be pretty good to not need the fan to be running.

I was playing prototype and everything fine without the graphics card fan plugged in. SO a tip to people who clean their pcs, check EVERYTHING just incase! Cause this could have ended much much worse!

You are not an Idiot, in fact, you are lucky because after so much tampering still your system is running. But the case was different when I did something like that but thank God I had invested in refurbished gaming laptops and that's why tampering with laptop video cards installed in them didn't cost me dear.

Yea lucky for sure! and my card is now sitting @ +-40 oC so its even cooler than before!

I am I got a windows 7 gadget reading from RivaTuner, my temps and they staying well down! I happy now about it!

I said I guessed he uses an aftermarket cooler, because he says he is getting 40C and that is not something the stock cooler is capable of.

No its the stock cooler, but I got excellent air flow in my case and the fan mod running the GPU fan @ 40% instead of the standard 22%...
