Default Nvidia rumoured to kill GTX285, GTX275, GTX260.

Full on retreat, can't compete with ATI

by Charlie Demerjian

October 6, 2009

NVIDIA IS KILLING the GTX260, GTX275, and GTX285 with the GTX295 almost assured to follow as it (Nvidia: NVDA) abandons the high and mid range graphics card market. Due to a massive series of engineering failures, nearly all of the company's product line is financially under water, and mismanagement seems to be killing the company.
Not even an hour after we laid out the financial woes surrounding the Nvidia GTX275 and GTX260, word reached us that they are dead. Normally, this would be an update to the original article, but this news has enough dire implications that it needs its own story. Nvidia is in desperate shape, whoop-ass has turned to ash, and the wagons can't be circled any tighter.
Word from sources deep in the bowels of 2701 San Tomas Expressway tell us that the OEMs have been notified that the GTX285 is EOL'd, the GTX260 is EOL in November or December depending on a few extraneous issues, and the GTX275 will be EOL'd within 2 weeks. I would expect this to happen around the time ATI launches its Juniper based boards, so before October 22.
The lone survivor, maybe, is the GTX295, available only as a complete board from Nvidia. This is said to be almost impossible to get, likely for reasons we went into in the earlier financial article, cost. AIBs do not expect this product to last very long, likely until current stock is depleted.

Although this rumour is likely to only be partially true, it sure has been some time since Ati have been able to release such an excellent card, thinks of 9800 and 1950 era. Competition is a beautiful thing and its great to see this rivalry as I benefit as an customer. Now lets hope that there will be a huge breaktrough on gaming on Linux so we can get rid of that bottleneck called windows gaming. They have almost zero incentive to make gaming on a pc attractive and since the release of the xbox work on pc gaming has dropped even further.

I have a hard time believing that Nvidia will stop making cards just because ATi finally came out with a better one! That would be like Gazz switching to the 360 because Forza 3 was much better than Gran Turismo.

This rumor seems a little too much to swallow.

The guy who posted this is notorious for his Nvidia hate for sure. However, he does have his facts straight most of the time and although this story seems like a biased piece of crap,

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT: Stop the presses Gazz!!!!!!
The rumour seems to become a reality. This is extremely sad news for all pc gamers. Due to a dispute with Intel Nvidia will stop producing highend chips for core I5 and 7 processors for now. Nvidia Halting Chipset Development - Lab Notes by ExtremeTech

Something is seriously up there!

Forza 3 much better? You haven't played the demo then. It's not a bad game though, it just isn't in the same league as GT is..... Forza 2.2

Thanks for asking.

There is no truth to this. Charlie has become a sponsored site of his sole advertiser. It's no coincidence his website looks like an AMD ad.

I am just going to go by realism and not 1 marketing mail in a poor attempt to stop the frenzy on this,
  • nVidia appears to quit chipsets
  • nVidia has a very low share in mobile gpu's
  • nVidia currently has no answer to the faster and cheaper AMD GPU`s
  • nVidia's SLI isexpensive and has a small market
  • Stock value of Nvidia is dramatic
Donīt get me wrong, I have no interest in Nvidia going belly up as I am a big fan of competition. I may have an Amd card myself, but thatīs simply because I find their cost-value very appealling. This post has nothing to do with any brand loyalty as my mobo has an Nvidia chipset and so does my beloved PS3.

However, something there seems to be totally f)'(_%_&

The story would have been more believable, if Nvidia had released their first DirectX 11 cards. Then it had made much more sense, because no gamer in posession of some brains is going to buy a 300+ euro graphics card anymore that is not compatible with DirectX 11.

[sarcasm] How come software doesn't push hardware sales? [/sarcasm]

Game devs, it is getting time you all switch to openGL. A complete new version of DirectX just because of some (read: a very few) additional features is something we should whoop-ass Microsoft for.

Gazz, the only Dx 11 cards currently available are AMD products. And those are known for their good performance in case of openGL games.

Dx11 is based on a certain hardware architecture which means that any manufacturer will produce a card that will run opengl games excelently.

Anyway, I think Nvidia is prone for a hostile takeover with stock plumenting as it is now. Intel, Maxtor, S3 and Sony seem to be the most logical contenders for that. Boy, a lot of people would be pissed if Sony took over though they are the most logical choice. They have mobiles for mobile gpu's. Laptops, netbooks, PS3/P and already work with physx. Besides that they have a huge branch for gaming and lots of exclusive titles that could just aswell be released on pc....
