agi/agp slotl

my friend has recently bought a new comp (pentium 4 3.6ghz) but when we went to install his graphics card the motherboard has its own version of a agp alot called agi (asrock home made port) the card works in this port but does not support the latest catalyst drivers. If we get the driver to work, will this port act as good as a normal agp port. I feel he may have been ripped off

any info or advice would be greatly appreiciated

I don't know these people ... its just some patent for, perhaps combining the "AGP" slot for motherboards that don't have it in the first place. (Some of them are using 1.5 AGP slots, not the new standard 3.0 versions)

I cannot really tell why the drivers won't install, maybe it's an older AGP slot (less then 3.0). Or a problem with Direct X who knows :bucky!: ( although it says the AGI slot supports DX 9 - Standard> which I don't know what they mean about that )

The thing is ... what made him buy this in the first place and not going for conventional motherboards for P4? because this is basically an upgraded cheap motherboard which wasn't any good at the first place, just added some features to it (like the AGP slot and a support for motherboards with 800mhz bus wide and a 3.04ghz processor, Serial ATA , bigger ram slots with 400mhz to handle 3/4gb's)< these are the high level boards from "ASRock" .

EDIT : I've check into it and I think the problem is the AGP slot version, using the old 1.5 instead of the new 3.0 versions to support better handle and such.

EDIT2: It seems that some of the motherboards that look like they have a newer AGP slot version also have an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 with Max Memory of 64MB . That means 2 cards on the same board, one integraded and one AGP = that could be a problem while installing new drivers.

EDIT3: Well, found the problem, All motherboards use 1.5 AGP slot version some have only up to x4 support but some of them also have X8 support. Many of the boards also have an intergraded graphic card, such as Intel-, which would be a problem while installing new drivers, since you will have to uninstall the intergraded card and disable it.

i have checked the compatable agp card list and his card is compatable, a radeon 8500. but on the list it says a different driver than the one we have tried(we tried catalyst 4.11) I think only 4.10 will work. I will try when i meet him later.

the original drivers that came with the card worked (catalyst 3.4 I think)

but when we tried halflife on this it ran at about 1 frame every 15 seconds, (not verplayable.)

would this be an old criver causing this non-performance or the stupid agi slot thing.

p.s he bought the computer from ebay and we both assumed a modern p4 rig would come with a agp port, maybe the ad even said it did

Can you specify the rest of the rig?

The 8500 (regular) is very close to the 4200 NVIDIA performance, both uses x4 AGP (64 mb version)

*However, 4200 runs HL2 with not many problems and in smooth look, using 3.0 version AGP slot x4 plus the drivers affect the card as well, but the main thing would be the AGP slot, which in your friends case its 1.5 version.

If you would like to know more about the catalyst drivers >Visit the HL2 forums and asked them about performance increase with new drivers while playing HL2, I don't know much about the catalyst series.

Yes you said that, But it is not a Pentium 4 it is a Celeron (533 MHz instead of 800 MHz bus wide ... means better performance).

How about the Ram, do you know how much he has?

Did he install Direct X 9.0c? (The Graphic card supports fully 8.1 not 9.0 but it should work just fine, same thing with GeForce 4200 as I said before)
