where ever you will go, they'll say 256mbof mem is better than 128...choose the more expensive...BUT: dont make a mistake while choosing the place you buy it, i mean, on many web sites, they will sell you great cards for peanuts...and in store, the same gpu will cost you your butt's skin.
:bucky!:
some will choose poorly, but you, choose wisely....

mmhm....well, maybe i was just too quick with my opinion.

why would it slow the card down? does it bottleneck it perhaps?

well, i had some tests with Doom 3, and the fps was DAMN slow on setting high no AA and AF (15 avg). till i got to the fact doom3 runs a default Ram card usage of 64 MB. i have 256 and changed it. the FPS made a boost of allmost 20 to 30 FPS!

one of the reasons i said that. tell me way it would slow the card down then?

The differences are:

Pro has a 1.6 pixelfillrate the XT a 2.0 fllrate
Pro's engine clock is @ 400/600 and the XT is @ 500/600

as far as I know those are the only diffentces between the 9600 PRO and the 9600 XT

Cards with 256MB of RAM use slower RAM than those with 128MB (that is no longer a problem for cards above 9800 Pro). Anyways, the 9600XT 128MB is a little faster than the 9600XT 256MB. Ofcourse you have a dramatic increase in framerate when changing from 64 to 256MB in Doom 3, 64MB is just way too low. But the difference between 128 and 256 will be much smaller. But if you like Doom 3 so much, why don't you buy nVidia? It's a well known fact that Doom 3 runs smoother on nVidia cards.

That's not (always) true for videocards though, like in this case. The 9600XT with 128MB is faster than the 9600 Pro with 256MB. Heck, 256MB on anything lower than a 9800XT only slows the card down. Only choose for 256MB when you're buying a high-end card.
THats EXACTLTY what I wanted to hear, that what I thought.
I am now going off to buy an ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb for £94 , instead of buying the ATI Radeon 9600Pro 256mb for £72

Thanks guys.

So, is this how graphics cards work:
If my game is only taking up for example 70mb as Im playing it, and my card is 256 then it doesnt matter if it IS 265 OR 128, its just how much you are using?

No problem man, and yes, that is how it works, and if the game does need more, it will use some of your system RAM (the in the Bios configurable Aperture Size, set it to half your system RAM). The only game that can use more than 128MB is Doom 3, at its highest settings, but with a 9600XT you wouldn't be able to play that game at its highest settings anyway, so you really don't need 256 Megs.
